oil or not?
This is my first post so i will start by saying hi all
I have just purchased a decat centre pipe and backbox for my 96wrx, the standard exhaust just doesnt sound like a scoob should
i am now looking at getting a high flow air filter, i have read some stuff
that says k&n are bad as they are too heavily oiled? and green is the one to go for, so:
1. does an oiled filter damage my maf, or only if there is too much oil, or not at all?
2. is the sti filter oiled and is it worth the extra money? if not which is best?
3. can you buy a non oiled filter?
please go easy on me, and i will leave to all you in the know.

Hi britishbulldog, welcome to ScoobyNet. I have used a KN in my MY99 for the last 3 years and had no problems. This year and the MY00 have a notoriously weak MAF and if any model was going to have issues it would be these. There isn't any performance advantage to speak of just more economical as they are reusable. The STi filters are also good and are just throw away at service time.

I have an Apexi power intake on my94 WRX. It's a dry cone filter.

Are you taking the air box out or just putting a panel filter in?
Have heard of oiled filters killing MAFs. I'd get a dry one.

confused
thanks for replies so far
right, 1 for and 1 against
still at square one, probably just being paranoid but u only ever hear horror stories, no one will post a topic "my air filter works", "problems since fitting air filter" - much more likely.
any one else that has/hadn't had problems?
im sure i read about a fine metal mesh filter that uses no oil but i cant find it (if it even exists).
any one no where i can get a non oiled filter, at the moment leaning towards the sti filter cos suppose subaru have spent enough on research?
not going to go for an induction kit unless i can get it fitted in the front wing, again heard horror stories about heatsoak from under the bonnet?
any comments welcome.

Hi again, I know this subject is a minefield. Just remember to research the topic using the search function on this site. There are many in favour of oiled filters and many against. I should point out the companies like AndyForrestPerformance, a very well respected mapper etc uses a KN filter in many of his 'stages' of upgrades, if its good enough for him

good point
skooby53
thanks for reply, that is a good point you have got there, "if its good enough for him" when i looked on the various scooby sites, ggr, scoobybits, world etc etc, they pretty much all sell them so surely they cant be that bad?
didnt realise sti filter was throw away, they are more expensive than i thought then, like i said prob just being paranoid,
may just order the sti one for now and see about the induction kit in
the front wing idea, i know a lot of people dont like them either but surely
putting it in the front wing solves the issue of heatsoak which unless im mistaken is the only drawback to an induction kit?

mmmm
that looks tidy, gonna definitely look into that one.
i take it that u remove the airbox and have the enclosed cone filter in its place, what about the resonator box in the wing, should i just replace it
with a pipe so the air just goes in the front bumper and straight to the filter? do u really need the resonator box, will it affect the maf, sensitive buggers these maf's apparently

Nothing to be gained from an IK at your present tuning level, its a lot of work and £ (both of which can be better invested) to stop it drawing in warm under-bonnet air (which will lose you power)
I'm running one of Scott.T's chips and a full de-cat, IMHO its OE air box and a KnN panel all the way
