Default More power=Bigger turbo??

I've had my98 uk classic for 1 year now and love it to bits

I got used to its power now and driving charactristics, I really want to start climbing up the modding ladder................My question is whats next?

I allready have Full decat and K+N pannel filter but after my recent rolling road I was not impressed.................

249hp(183 KW) 6310 RPM and 226lbft(306 Nm) 4800 RPM

Can someone explain what turbo I sholud be looking at for 300hp? There are loads on the market but just wanted peoples experience! Also are they just bolt on? I've seen some turbos with a 90 degre bend, they dont look like the one on my car

I spoke to JGM about an apexi PFC he said it will take me upto 280hp safely but I'd like a bigger turbo asewll to get upto 300hp

I would reccomend a vf 23 from a sti v3 I had one on my99 and I would say it made about 310-320 mapped by JGM and made a really good road car.

First, why are you unhappy with those figures? They're great! For reference, a std MY98 UK Turbo 2000 AWD should be only 208bhp/214lb ft. So with a decat and filter UNMAPPED you have gained 31bhp/12lb ft! - which is good. You certainly couldn't have expected anymore IMO.

Being a MY98, you WILL need an after market ECU and a second hand PFC will fit the bill - your cheapest option. JGM is refering to the fact that it's your small TD04 turbo that will limit power to 280bhp - the PFC can be mapped for 100s more bhp than that.

Your TD04 is a front entry so a good, and popular, upgrade is the VF35 turbo - potentially good for up to 350bhp, when mapped. But also a VF22/23/24/28/29 (as fitted to MY97-00 WRXs and v.3-6 STis will easily get you to 300 too

Your existing 380cc injectors may be nearing max IDC if pushed to 300bhp though, so you might have to get 440s as well...

Have you thought of remapping to get the best from what you have got already?

Thanks for the reply, now you put it like that, it makes me feel better!

I will keep my eyes open in the classified section for a VF turbo! Am I right in saying that a TD05 is no good for my car then?

Yes I've thought about it, but at £250 per map I thought to get all the bits I need first to save time and money later..........

The second hand TD05 16g turbo you're referng to has a top entry 'snorkel' feed cast into its compressor cover, so this would need to be machined off (and possibly a short collar rewelded back on, too). These turbos are also good for getting on for 350bhp and are considered tough as old boots - stonger then the VFs.

If you have the cash/patience, then this this is the most cost-effective/satisfying thing to do.

jgm is helping to sort my car at the moment give him a shout and ask his opinion on what turbo etc, he knows his stuff, i agree with sorting out and getting what you need before you go for a map its expensive to keep doing all the time. if you change your turbo (you need front entry) and injectors you will blast your 300 mark i would have thought.
nice car by the way woody69 mine is exactly the same my98 just done my wheels black as well.
oh you might want to look at your intercooler as well ! i'm just taking off my sti8 one modified to fit your car including brackets. pipes and undertray i'm selling it very shortly good for around 400hp unless your thinking of going down the front mount route. pm me if you might be interested and i'll sned you some pics.

Cool thats shed some light on the situation!!

It all sounds like a slippery slope though..............

When you upgrade something, you have to upgrade something else to compensate for that! What about the internals of the engine? I dont want to tune my car to within' an inch of its life! I just want good reliable power!

So 300hp seems to be the magical figure thats safe for STD internals?

What about the clutch? I dont wanna' left leg like Arnnie................

My list is getting bigger

1) VF35 Turbo
2) 440 injectors
3) Apexi power FC
4) walbro fuel pump

what else will I need

No. that's the lot (you already have the deact/filter to go with them)... Oh, aside from a set of one-level colder NGK PFR7B spark plugs (£20+ on eBay new).

The mapper should get you to about 320bhp (maybe more) with those... BUT it's your TMIC that is now the limiting factor out of those mods, and the ACTs (intake air charge temps) may become a problem. FMIC next, then...

its a slippy slippy slope lol. mine exactly was the same spec as you've listed above except i had a vf29 and the sti8 intercooler. mine was running around 320/330hp and it was a nice car on the road. don't forget with the power fc you can have different boost settings 4 in total so you can have say 1.1 for bobbing round town then say 1.4 for when you want to let your hair down with some in between. don't know what clutch you have in at the moment but my standard one was ok till i changed to a uprated excedy one.
its always about something else reaching its limit thats where the cost comes in wwhen you go up on the power i'm just going over 400 and its bloody expensive.

And just as you start to enjoy 300+ bhp....

Your clutch will start slipping, and then the gearbox will start to die !

LOL

Love cars ! Hate bills...

P.S. Funny me
