Are they all the same thread and size?

If so, can anyone confirm the details?

Sure the sumps are the same across the board. I fitted a classic one to the newage (well the garage did)

the issue was the threads were cream crackered on the old one so i got quite a bad oil leak. Replacing the plug didn't do it, needed a replacement sump.

Now leak free.

5t.

And what, exactly, is wrong with an alloy sump plug?

Some of them are of incredibly poor quality, in fact, I would go as far as to say most of them are of incredibly poor quality, and when torqued up go oval, distorting the mating face so they leak, or worse still, come back out!

Never had a problem, just don't graunch them so tight. Better still, use a torque wrench.

Like I say, not ALL alloy plugs are bad, hell we have been using alloy fasteners in race cars and aircraft for years to save weight.

That said, a torque wrench will never change the fact that most are made using substandard alloy by people who have no skills to be making fasteners in the first place and should stick to making shiny bits and bobs. Ive even seen the threads come off the main body totally... was hanging by a lockwire on a Lancer 7 rally car we look after... sump was empty, owner mad.

Havn't seen locking wire for 15 years, when I left the RAF.

Old school stuff, Canberras with Avons and Wessex with Gnomes. Funnily enough some of the gearboxes had alloy sump plugs LOL

LOL @ the alloy sump plugs.

Lockwire is pretty much standard issue on motorsport safety parts to be honest, we use more lockwire than speaker wire. LOL

Anyway, who wants to buy a top quality steel sump plug with ultra high strength magnet? Did i mention I sell them?

No you hadn't mentioned that. Nice profit?

Had trouble with an MOT examiner over lock wire many moons ago.

Had fitted Ambassador/Princess (remember them?) 4 pot calipers to my mk2 RWD escort as the original 2 pots were crap (an ongoing trait with Imprezas LOL) and decided to wirelock the bolts instead of paying a fortune for the tab washers. He decided that tabwashers were standard to the car they should be fitted. I pointed out that as the calipers/discs/struts/antidive kit/engine/backaxle and just about every other component on the car was non standard apart from the windscreen then his point was mute to say the least. Passed in the end.

Had no trouble with MOT's when posted to N Wales as this was the spiritual home of UK rallying, and they were used to rally cars being lockwired everywhere, as you've pointed out.

Wow, id almost forgotten the old princess 4 pot upgrade! Great brakes. **** car. I think Austin spent 40% of the design budget on it brakes... they sure didn't budget for any galvanising did they? You could see those 4 pots from inside the car, through the holes in the floor.

I haven't finalised the import deal yet but i am sourcing genuine brand name items from USA because nobody over here can do a product i am happy with and I only sell items i have tested and trust. Wont be cheap compared to those alloy ones, but will far exceed the quality and specification.

One of my favorite drain bungs was a drilled out standard one with magnets put in it with sodding superglue... took them out of engines and there is no magnet! What the hell is it stuck too in there?! Will it fall off, what will it hit when it does? These are still available...

Will have a website dedicated to it when done, so keep your eye out on www.magneticsumpplugs.co.uk
(Will change DNS when finalised)
