Well thats a weight off my mind, I was concerned that perhaps Id been mugged off with a replaced WRX engine instead of an STI lump in there with a red-top manifold chucked on !!

Excuse my n00bness but what is a closed deck block ?

Most blocks are open. I.e. there's plenty of room all round the liners and they're connected only at each side to the block. A CDB is mostly solid metal all round the top of the liners. A few holes to let water through and that's it. Obviously much stronger (and noticeably heavier as well).

No problem. If you want a closer look, have a peep at my thread on Projects 'DIY Budget Engine Rebuild' and you'll see what an open and closed deck look like. CDBs weren't used even for STis for version 3 onwards.

Ah...at last we find one! I've heard talk that some early WRX blocks were closed but didn't have the jets, so here we have one.

Merlin i know you build engines and used to graft for ABRO(im a mate of scoobysmiff) can the bore squirters be machined into a block and where can i get the originals if still available mate?

Yep,ex ABRO mate and the engines i do are a bit smaller than the CV12's the block can be machined and tapped to take the bore squirters but IMHO its a bit of a pointless exercise on an open deck block - a good standard CDB can be picked up for approx. 200 beer tokens.
The bore squirters have got a check valve built into them and only work when the oil pressure is above 47psi, so the oil supply/pressure isnt affected to the mains and big ends. They are still available but dont come cheap these days.
Say hello to scoobysmiff when you see him next

Mick
