Oil injectors ??

Rebuilding my MY97 Type R and it doesnt have any oil injectors under the pistons, Im not sure if it should or not, can anyone shed any light ?

W1ndowLicker 25 June 2008 05:20 PM

Bump !, Does anyone have a clue at all ?? Someone must have rebuilt one before ?

exvaux 25 June 2008 05:22 PM

only closed deck blocks had under piston squirters,my typeR didnt have anything when it was rebuilt

Well thats a weight off my mind, I was concerned that perhaps Id been mugged off with a replaced WRX engine instead of an STI lump in there with a red-top manifold chucked on !!

Excuse my n00bness but what is a closed deck block ?

silent running 25 June 2008 10:44 PM

Most blocks are open. I.e. there's plenty of room all round the liners and they're connected only at each side to the block. A CDB is mostly solid metal all round the top of the liners. A few holes to let water through and that's it. Obviously much stronger (and noticeably heavier as well).

Cool, thanks for the explanation :) So Its pretty safe that I havent got the wrong engine then ! :)

No problem. If you want a closer look, have a peep at my thread on Projects 'DIY Budget Engine Rebuild' and you'll see what an open and closed deck look like. CDBs weren't used even for STis for version 3 onwards.

Not all CDB have the squiters! Ive just stripped one and there are none fitted, i assumed they all had them but obviously not.

Ah...at last we find one! I've heard talk that some early WRX blocks were closed but didn't have the jets, so here we have one.

And i have seen several WRX '94/95 open deck blocks with bore squirters just to confuse things even more :lol1: :lol1:

Yep it came out of a 92 car mate, cracing thread your doing by the way! I did the same a year ago on my STI 1 but couldnt be arsed to put it online! Keep up the good work mate.

Merlin i know you build engines and used to graft for ABRO(im a mate of scoobysmiff) can the bore squirters be machined into a block and where can i get the originals if still available mate?

merlin24 29 June 2008 12:23 PM

Yep,ex ABRO mate and the engines i do are a bit smaller than the CV12's ;) the block can be machined and tapped to take the bore squirters but IMHO its a bit of a pointless exercise on an open deck block - a good standard CDB can be picked up for approx. 200 beer tokens.
The bore squirters have got a check valve built into them and only work when the oil pressure is above 47psi, so the oil supply/pressure isnt affected to the mains and big ends. They are still available but dont come cheap these days.
Say hello to scoobysmiff when you see him next :thumb:
