Default Help threaded bolt on engine block..

Thought I'd see what other info I can get from any passing tuners..

Hey guys,

Need some urgent help. Was transfering my gauges from my WRX to my new STi, and I've managed to destroy the threads on the block, above piston 3, where you tap the oil temperature gauge to. Can I get one of those kits which rethread the hole but a size up, and then use an adapter? Or is this completely not advisable on an engine..

Regards,

You could re-drill the hole bigger and use a helicoil to take it back to the origional size..

You have to ask yourself where all the swarf from Helicoiling it out will go - that is the oil feed drilling which supplys the head and mains/big ends.
You dont want to be doing that without stripping the engine to remove the swarf from the oil gallerys.

Just my 2 pence worth.

Well I would block the hole off, as that surely is the only way. Pulling the engine out and stripping it isn't going to be cheap at all, well over 1000quid from what I've been getting quotes of anyways. So I think I'm willing to take the risk and pay the extra whatever it is to rebuild the engine if necessary !

Russian roulette that mate!!.

A helicoil kit is not a cheap thing to buy and you will need to strip off the whole of the top of the engine to even begin to think about helicoiling it. The newly drilled hole needs to be accurate and straight. Then a new thread to suit the helicoil created and then the helicoil screwed into the fresh threaded hole.

There will be lots of swarf - alloy swarf sure, but none of it is good in the main oil gallery for the rear main bearings and the drivers side cylinder head.

I discussed it with the engineers here yesterday and we think that we can block off the hole successfully, without creating swarf and then relocate the sensor to another position on the engine.

Not specialist at all, easy to do.

I would use a real good hoover while drilling though.

"Specialist" as in you couldnt just go to B&Q and get a kit......But as Api said it would be a tricky thing to do, getting swarf in the oil way would be very bad news!

Hope you get it sorted tho mate!
