could be a number of things.
are the fans coming on straight away. If so its the engine temp sensor.
but sounds like a doggy fuel pump to me, happened to me on several impreza's. start messing around like you say, then they just die when you least want it to

could be your MAF sensor or boost selenoid! try taking off your boost selenoid and cleaning with a bit of brake cleaner...

if you think its bad fuel, try adding a little octane booster

good luck

Here

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...-solenoid.html

But doubt it is that unless you're talking about hestitation due to overboost (ie, 4th or 5th gear with your foot to the floor)

i reckon you should change your air filter/induction as if it dirty or blocked, you could be sucking in contaminated air or not enough air for the appropriate air/fuel mixture (charge). your maf sensor could be playin up your response

good luck

I am having a similar problem. Part throttle epsecially from cold I get a missfire so bad it is like a mild kangarooing, full throttle seem fine?. Im poping down stairs in a min to inspect the spark plugs for clues. If that throws no light on the subject (eg gaps or coilpacks) I'll do a compression check, then pop them back in then get the brake cleaner on the MAF and boost solenoid. If all that fails then I will start looking at fuel pump and filter, fingers crossed it wont go that far

All I ended up doing was taking out the plugs, which had some grey deposits on them, gave them a clean, cleaned the maf and cleaned my airfilter all with.......carb cleaner! When I first Drove he the problem was still there but alot better, and as it warmed up it drove fine again. The final test will be tomorrow, from cold but so far so good.

Yeah mine has come back. Its still there just very slight compared to how it was. Moneys on the coilpacks methinks. If you have a multi meter you can check the resistance on the packs to see if there fubared.
