Hi Chaps,

I'm a relative newbie (had my scoob a year but it went pop 7 months ago and I been waiting (saving) to get a rebuild done since then). The car is now in the very capable hands of API for a full rebuild and some tweaks.

After speaking to David, it seems a FMIC is a worthy addition before the remap etc and I have just spotted the group buy on the Hybrid GT spec FMIC and am keen to buy one to fit myself during the running in period.

The main questions I have are:

1) Do I have to replace the standard airbox and TSL/Green panel filter with an induction kit (I'd rather not if I don't have to!) or can I modify it?

2) Will my standard BOV be compatable or will I need a horrible noisy thing (pshhpshh puke.... )(again, you might gather, I would rather not!)

I want the car to run at it's best (and safest) but neither look or sound too posey and attention grabbing - stealth is the word!

you will need to replace the standard airbox with an induction kit as the pipework runs in that area, dont believe there is any way around that.

Depending on the year of your car, you can generally reuse the existing dumpvalve, just need the hose to plumb it back in (usually involves using a reducer hose from the take off point on the fmic to the oe valve)

My car is a MY99 UK Impreza.

Anyone got any ideas on an induction kit that:

1) Won't cost the earth.
2) Won't cause MAF problems (already a bain and reason for the £5k rebuild)
3) Aren't too loud?

I have used K+N 57i on Pug Von my Clio Cup and Civic Type-R but they are a bit pricey!

Deffo no way to move the airbox and continue using it with custom pipework somehow?

Apexi Power Intake's are supposed to be quite MAF friendly and don't cost that much.

API supplied my induction, a large cone filter (do not use Mushroom shaped ones) for about £100. This keep the MAF happy.
The Hybrid I have took the stock BOV no probs.
There is an increase in induction hisssing but it is not Boy Racer. I, like you cannot tolerate the noises you sometimes hear...

You are in safe efficient hands at API.

To fit the standard BOV exactly what adaptor will I be needing?

I n my front mount project their are some bov adapters that bolt onto your dv that has the same outlet as the flange welded to one of your front mount pipes so all you need is to run a pipe to connect
Ihave a spare one here you can have for £20 or £40 with dv inc post

Powertech i think thats how they spell it its a fine wire gause filter and doesnt have any lube on it to bugger up your air flow meter a common problem with subaru's, and they retail @ £99.95

Cheers for the advice so far!

Just had a read about the Powertec one and it said:

"In short great power gains and the loudest induction roar we have ever heard."

Any one know of a quieter option?

Sorry to be so **** about the noise but I don't want people hearing my car a mile away!

Unfortunately all cone filter are noisy, I've had experience of 2 induction kits fitted to my old STi 4 which also had a Hybrid FMIC, the first was the Apexi then a huge Green Cotton filter mounted on a custom made stainless adapter plate, out of the 2 the Apexi was a fair bit quieter, may be due to it being fairly small in comparison.

One piece of advice i will give is steer clear of any stainless mesh filters, they offer very good flow rates at the expense of good filtration, good for straining tea and thats about it IMO.

For M/Y 99 you need a flange adaptor and the offer from Kips is very good at £20 for the BOV flange adaptor. Bight his arm off.
Personally I would use a K+N cone filter (good filtration ability and not too noisey) or if you are prepared to do a little bit of work fit a cold air kit that sits in the inner wing. let me know if you want more info on this.
Claims of induction kits adding lots of BHP are cobblers and in some cases they result in a power loss.

Do NOT confuse the Hybrid FMIC, tube and fin, with the Autobahn item which may still be bar and plate.

I won't confuse the two, Hybrid is the one I want for certain.

I think I am heading for the Apexi and I will fabricate a box to put it in to prevent heat soak.

However, I was in Halfrauds today and spotted a ripspeed (ahem) carbon filter box fitted with a filter that looked alot like the apexi item which claimed to require no oil and was only £60, might be worth investigation I guess.

Will get a PM for the BOV now!
