Forget your water temp - you need to look at your oil

I wait about 2mins while i move the wifes car out of the way (traker still armed and Disclok on) then drive off,i wait till the water temp is correct then give it another 10-15 mins before i move up the rev range, through the gears, without thapping the nuts off it.(short journeys i hardly ever go above 2000 rpm)

Only after about 10 mile will i give it some beans,by this time the oils in the engine, gearbox, diffs would have all warmed up well.

Start the friggin thing up and drive it away FFS

Letting it idle does no good whatsoever ........... just don't go over 3000 RPM for a good few miles in this weather.

It's all common sense ...

You don't need childish chavvie idiot gauges to tell you what to do

Nothing worse than sitting being some knobber who wont turn his engine off for 5 minutes before filling up with petrol.

Does it say in the manual that you shouldn't move the car till its hot or that you have to leave it ticking over for 5 mins before turning it off?

Just drive it and enjoy it .....

Hate to say it but he's right. Its a modern car designed for actually using. Get in, start up, and drive to work. Just don't rag it until you've been running at normal temp for a while.

10 Miles is a bit excessive isn't it? Iv heard of better safe than sorry but 10 miles is a long time to wait before raping your car, 5 or 6 should surely be enough?

As soon as my engine temp gauge (the one under the fuel gauge ) gets just over the bottom third - it's boot time

You don't need to wait on the drive (though I do, as it means the car is significantly less lumpy when you drive off), just keep the car off-boost till the fluids are warmed up; takes considerably longer for oil to get up to temp than for water.

In cold temps, particularly if the car's been left standing overnight etc.. 10 miles could be about right. An engine is a hefty great lump of metal; if someone thinks it'll all be nice and toasty after a few miles I'd suggest they're mistaken.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR UNLESS:

You have let it idle for 13min 43secs, or the oil reaches 73.94 degrees C

Better still lock it in the garage til summer.... mind you that opens up another can of worms.... 'should I drive my car when its a bit warm outside'

the fact i leave it on the drive idling is ONLY to move the wifes car out the way.

5.52534 min shoud suffice in temps ranging from 5.34343 - 13.334 C. Above that temp range you can divide the temp by pie, and multiply my day of the week.

.....That brings me to cool down times, I might start another thead for that.

I give mine a couple of mins to warm up before I set off. Let the temp gauge rise up and then give it another couple of miles before I take it on boost.

Car runs fine and it doesn't upset the neighbours too much.

Thats what I do anyway.

Give mine about 10 mins before it starts getting any reasonable amounts of boost.

If you're confident that the folks who denegrate the importance of warming the car up properly before giving it some boost will pay for a rebuild when your engine goes pop much earlier than you'd have liked, the by all means give it stick when it's cold!!

If not..........

Cooling down tends to be overstated on here. The only thing you really need to avoid is turning the car straight off after you've been on the turbo for some time. Off boost driving for the last few minutes of your journey is fine. BUT just cause some folks are OTT in this respect (and they're not doing the car any harm) this should not be used as justification for not warming a car before extending it; this IS critical for engine longevity!

Oil in mine warms up quicker than the water but prob due to temp sensor for water being in top hose over radiator.

It doesnt say anywhere, but the fact remains oil will not be at its best untill it warms up to its correct working temp.

I have had a few Turbocharges cars now,as well as many N/A cars.

I have also had oil temp gauges in the turbo cars,if you could only see the temp of your water and the temp of you oil after say 5 mins you would for definately not be putting you foot down.

You do what you like, its your car but for the sake of keeping it below 2000-2500 rpm for a couple of mile more...well its up to you.
