Rattle & loss of power since fitting ninja downpipe
As the above really.
I had my ninja sports cat downpipe fitted to my99 classic at a local respected jap car mechanic yesterday but ever since it sounds rattly and its not pulling no way near as much as before.
Took it back it today & he pulled a face and said 'Ooo sounds like the turbos f*cked' What!!! it was fine before i took it.
I thought if the turbo had gone it should be smokin but i've noticed no smoke yet.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be?? Sorry for ramblin, im well gutted
p.s. do you think i should park it up and not use it?

long shot, but assuming the rest of the engine has'nt been touched, then the only thing that's changed is the downpipe and cat. Have you gone from de-cat DP to the ninja? if so your probably feeling the effects of increased back pressure.
The rattle could be a loose heatshield somewhere - if there's one on the ninja cat and it turns out to be the source of the rattle, i'd have the whole cat replaced since you could have a damaged one.
good luck!

Hi,
I cant see no blue smoke & i dont have a boost gauge unfortunately but i can certainly hear the turbo spooling up alot louder now unlike before.
Theres no heatshields on the ninja downpipe so there will be no rattles there, the only mods ive got is K&N panel filter & magnex backbox with decat centre pipe.
Im just concerned that the garage could have broke something & how do i prove it was fine before??

You'll struggle to get a garage to admit to liability, once you've payed them that's it. Might be a plan to get another garage to look it over. If your compressor blades are damaged you won't see smoke but will see a drop everywhere in performance. Ratting could be what remains of your compressor bashing around the housing, with the broken bits making their way into your engine, so if your mechanic is right you could be asking for trouble by driving it. Best way to check would be to pop off the intake pipe to the turbo and looking at the compressor.

The compresser blades situation sounds nasty & expensive
Ive not taken it above 2,000 revs since just to be safe but sounds like i better stop using it.
Does the turbo normally whistle alot louder if its on its way out?
Would the blowing cause such a great loss in power & horrible racket???

If the downpipe is not lagged then the turbo will sound louder and you will hear what sounds like a rattling noise, lagging generally damps this out. This is because the original heat shield damped the sound. See thread at https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...-downpipe.html
Do you still have the heat shield on the turbo? If so this will not be fixed as firmly as before (due to no fixings on your new downpipe) and could rattle. The up-pipe shields can rattle as well.
I found that my decat downpipe resulted in more lag, i.e. power came in at higher revs (say couple of hundred rpm) and this makes it feel more sluggish on pick-up. However, when power does come in it should be noticeably better, say 3800 up.

I had mine fitted by Xtreme, wasn't lagged at the time, no ratles, and the improvement in engine response and power at low revs was immediately noticable. I'd take it to a scooby specialist and get them to take a peek. If original garage has buggered it up, send em the bill to get it rectified.
Changing a DP should be no problem whatsoever for anyone with half a clue! Only issue is that sometimes the bolts get seized on so the original can be a b**ch to get off. Again, not too big a deal if you know what you're doing and have the right tools though.

You think it will be difficult to heat wrap while its on the car?

I only live round corner from scoobyclinic, see if they can diagnose it.

An unwrapped DP should not cause a rattle!!! Mine was fine without the wrapping!

mine is fine without any wrapping as well. Also I disagree about the spool up from an earlier post, mine seemed to improve. The only way I can see it affecting spool in a negative way is if you have gone to a larger diameter bore.
If you want to heat wrap your downpipe, you should be able to remove the downpipe quite easily now that it has just been changed. (should take less than an hour to remove and replace - obviously more time to wrap it)
