Pathetic fuel consumption
Hi guys,
Got a strange one for ya. Had my 94 WRX for about 1.5 years now and I have only ever got 160-170 miles per full tank. Doesn't matter whether you boot it or drive slowly, it doesn't differ by much. Think my record mileage is about 180. I used to have a 93 WRX and was getting over 200 per tank all the time.
Anyway, recently I spent a fortune and uprated fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and put in a Power FC. Had the car mapped by Jollygreenmonster and we discovered that 2 of my injectors were leaking fuel into the cylinders. So Simon swapped them for some spare ones he had and then he checked they were sealed correctly. Went out and mapped that car and was then hoping for an improvement in MPG. However, it has made no difference!
The car was running seriously too rich before mapping so I was expecting a big difference due to having it set up correctly and fixing the leaks, but no such luck..............
There can't be a leak elsewhere as the mileage is the same whether it takes you 1 week or 2 weeks.
Sooooo, what can I do now? Surely it should do more mileage to a full tank than it is??? What other problems could I have???
Thanks for any advice.
Steve

Could the problem perhaps be that since the re-map, and the subsequent increase in power, the car is now using more fuel to provide the increased performance?
The next step for me would be to change the lambda sensor, as this is the most likely culprit if the car is a bit too heavy on fuel.
To put it into perspective, I get 280 miles to a tank from my MY97 STI with a mix of driving, and 300+ miles on long motorway trips.

Hi Steve,
It might be worth trying it with the lambda sensor turned off.
on the commander go to
ETC --> Function Select
change the bottom one O2 Feedback. . it is an annoying japanese character but you want it the opposite of Knock Warning which is defintly ON.
Failing that either your heavy foot is using the extra power and drinking the fuel as mentioned or one of the seals has failed again?
remove the plugs (gets coil packs way out of the way or removed) and spin it over to check for leaks etc..

1995 WRX with full stainless etc but no remap for UK fuel
I used to get 160 with just a backbox but when I fitted the sports cat dp and decat centre the usual fuel 'economy' went up to around 200 and slightly above. With that said, I can still get nearer 160 on a blatty one.

Ok, I have turned the O2 sensor off, and also got rid of the fuel on the over run. I will take it easy for thenext tank and report back.
I know the car will be using lots of fuel when i'm booting it about, but most of my tank is done on standard boost and "normal" driving in traffic.
Thanks
Steve

Absolutley, yes. Drove to Norfolk stuck behind lots of lorries and tractors with the kids in the back average 60 mph. Did over 150 miles on just over a third of a tank. Decided to see how far I could push it after that. I can usually do 340-350miles per tank on motorway journeys though.

I fill up, do 330-360km, then have to fill up again. Rarely get much more than that. That's on a mixture of urban roads, mountain roads, and autoroute. Mind you, I don't let the tank drain right down, and I do fill up before the light comes on (just about when the guage is at the bottom).
Not exactly efficient, but then I'd have bought a diesel if i wanted that.
