Default Cold start idle - how long do you leave it??

Just bought an 05 PPP WRX - never known an idle to last so long at such high revs.

What is the standard concensus for idling times? Obviously I want to look after the engine but sometimes I just cant sit there for 5 minutes at 90 db for fear that the neighbours are going to hang me! I leave at 6am to go to work

The dealer said that I could drive it from cold off boost until she warms up. Is this the case or are they just trying to guarantee themselves some future business.

Cheers

Blimey, i'm normally rollin whilst i turn the key!!!! Don't get up early enough for anything else

Seriously i start her up then leave it maybe 10 secs, lightly press the throttle and she settles down to around 1000rpm then i'm off, no boost of course till around 10 mins.........ish!!

Sitting there for 5 mins acutally does more harm than good, driving off boost is better for your car as the oil circulates around the engine quicker building up more heat (thats better for your car).
I do this....
Start car, do some other bits (about 30 secs) drive car below 2.5k for first 5 miles, drive car below 3k for next 5 miles, enjoy car because she is now warmed up (10 miles)

Get in it - turn on - drive off keeping under 3,000rpm for the first 10-15 minutes... really there is no need to do anything else IMHO.

10-15 mins in london is about 1 miles isnt it Ben?
The point being that its not time that counts, its distance covered.
Your oil aint even hot after 1 mile, its warm, after 5.... its still warming up to its optimum temp, at 10 miles it should be at 70-80 deg which is nice if not hotter.
In town your water temp will go up considerably faster than your oil temp, hence miles done = better than time done

Yes very true - 30 mins in the morning and I've done less than 10 miles! No opportunity to make use of any boost when crawling along either.

It's also not just about engine temp - idling won't heat up your gear box / diff oil.
