I've an MY99 and mine was goosed (think this is what resulted in an engine rebuild...) I tried ECU resets and unplugging the MAF whilst the car was running etc and there were no tell-tale signs that there was anything wrong.

The only fault that seemed to stand out was holding the car about 80mph on the motorway and the boost seemed to surge on and off. And TBH boost wasn't great on the car most of the time.

The only was to be sure (AFAIK) is to actually change it for a new one. I borrowed one off a mate with the same age car and noticed an improvement in performance straight away. For the sake of about £70ish - it may be worth buying a new one, unless you too can borrow one to check before you buy

Easy - if it doesn't have a green spot near one of the screws it is faffed and should be replaced They all fail by starting to under read, green-spot versions are more sturdy than previous ones, just replace it to be safe.
