I just swapped a TD04 for a VF35. Same series at least. I don't think any of the VFs can beat a TD04 for low down response, but if a VF23 is anything like my VF35, it gets up to full boost a lot quicker once it IS going.

VF23 is made by IHI and TD04 by Mitsi.

Pretty sure the waste gate would be different and not interchangable.

Vf23 is a lot bigger turbo and will spool up a lot slower but give you more power at the mid/top end of the rev range, and you will definatly need your ECU remapped to suit.

You can use the TD04 wastegate 'actuator' - I assume this is what you mean?

You can swap without a remap, but need to get the car checked afterwards to ensure it's not dett'ing. Make sure you're running no more than .9->1 bar of boost over 6k rpm if still on stock fuel system. Note that if you try and run more than ~1.35 bar mid-range the VF23 compressors blades will break, but that this turbo nicely tails off at high revs.

Yes, use a boost controller or if you're waiting for a remap and want to take it easy, just connect the boost signal from the compressor outlet directly to the actuator input. Then it will open the wastegate at 8-10 psi and that will be your boost limit.

i thought the 23 blades were stronger then the 22?

i have ran my 23 at over 1.4bar scince i built it from second hand parts and it has been on there for 2 years!!

Lucky you SM - I've broken 2 at 1.45 bar (overboost, caused by untested loads from drifting on track). I used to run them at 1.4 bar on the road without problem, 1.35 is me being careful

VF22 and 23 compressor wheels both have shoddy reputations - I even broke a VF23 blade due to water ingress after removing the resonator (and know of 2 others who did same). Now OK, drop of water hitting a wheel rotating at god knows how may RPM is like being hit in the face with a brick....but the TD05 and 06 wheels survive the same no problem.

Where did you get 2nd hand parts for a VF23 from? Thought it was core only job from IHI? My builder has loads of the damned things needing new compressor wheels. He's experimenting with a Garret one currently.
