Angry Misfiring Badly/Idle Lumpy

MY 95 WRX.

Put 20 quids worth of optimax in on saturday, got back to the car after paying and it wouldnt start. Would turnover and fire up then cut out straight away.

Eventually got it to run but was lumpy as hell, but then miraculously it cleared up and ran fine until monday afternoon when it started misfiring badly again right the way through the rev range.

It is now just to say running and ticking over really badly. Any slight touch on the throttle causes it to misfire and pop and bang it **** off!!

When it started misfiring this afternoon it was also chucking out black smoke from the exhaust and smelt rich as hell.

Tried another maf sensor from a mates car but made no difference.

Any advice greatly appreciated

cheers

Mark

It would be a coincidence that you just happened to fill up and when you start the car immediatley after paying the car plays up. Wouldn't have thought It would be anything to do with the fuel you put in as this wouldn't have had a chance to filter through. How empty was your tank at the point of re-fueling?

Could be an ignition problem, possibly coilpacks or plugs or leads even, have you checked them yet?

The tank was just above the 'E' on the gauge and it was the first time i had put petrol in the car in just under a year as it had not been used at all over the winter.

I'll check the plugs and coilpacks today and do an ecu reset and diagnostic.

Heres hoping.....

The car wouldnt even start first thing this morning!!

After checking the plugs (which were sooty as hell) and coil packs (which were totally unmarked and looked like brand new) the car was put back together. Still no better

Then decided to take a chance an drain the tank.

Turned out to be a dodgy batch of optimax!!!!

Drained the tank totally and put a small amount of regular unleaded in and the car started straight away, idled smoothly and reved through spot on.

Last time I use that crap!!

But what to use now?????

not meaning to put you out, but you didn't fill it with diesel by any chance did you????

had quite a few customers cars lately and its suprising how many people are caught out by the 'multi' pump nozzles...............

No.

I've got two and a half gallons of the stuff that have been drained from the tank and its all petrol.

Very weak smelling petrol, but definitely petrol.

The Optimax sticker on the pump kind of gave it away too.
