do the obvious...
does it turn over yes no....
if yes, does the fuel pump chirp on initial key turn yes no
if yes unplug cam sensor and replug does it start yes no
if yes it coud be the cam sensor... if no do the same for the crank sensor
its probably one of these two thats giving the prob...
i did the cam first, it was the crank

I've had that problem but no check light came on so I ruled out sensors and blamed transponder immobiliser but ive never proved it cause it happens so rarely. How often does yours do it.

If its a UK car since 99 with the factory alarm and the engine turns over then it is unlikely to be related to the Sigma alarm/immobiliser as this also cuts the starter/crank circuit.
The vehicles also have a transponder immobiliser, but this was not Thatcham approved (hence the Sigma Cat 1) and this only cuts fuel or ignition and still allows the engine to crank.
Cant help with what the problem may be, but hope this may identify an area that it's not.

Crank sensor!
on the front of the engine below the alternator, between the pulleys..
the cam sensor looks identical and is below the oil filler.. unplug and unbolt and pull out and clean them both (don't muddle them though) and refit and hopefully the problem will be gone until they get dirty again.
