Default changing turbo

If I was to change my standard turbo for a TD05 what other mods would I need.

The car is a MY01 WRX with an ABC chip and FCD, full decat running 19psi dropping off to 17 psi.. no activity on knocklink (apart from in this hot weather over the last 2 days)

last 2 RR's were 297 , 294 bhp

would removing the ABC and getting a remap produce more noticeable gains or is a new turbo the way to go ??

any potential gear box probs with a new turbo etc ...??

td05 will be fine other mods will produce better results with this turbo, but you will need the car to be mapped for it or there will be lots of lag, say turbo not coming in till about 4500 lag lol

I cant belive anyone would go for a turbo swap without having it mapped Ok some of the flow / pressure curves for them are quite similar, but if its significantly different it becomes very easy to damage your engine.

If you ECU map is expecting a smaller amount of boost at a given RPM, and your new turbo is giving more boost than the ECU can compensate fuel for = trouble.

I'm not suggesting I have a new turbo without a remap, just treat me as a novice asking stupid Q's

I thought a remap would be needed. AFAIK a TD05 will be pretty much a straight bolt on part (does it need to be FE?)

what are the implications regarding gearbox, fuel pump etc and this chip I've got ??

thanks for the info so far fellas, keep it coming

You will need to get it converted to front entry if it isn't already (cost £50-£100).

Some people have upgraded turbos without changing mapping or ecu (Rich Wild from memory running 387bhp on std ecu). I'm not sure how that all works but you will need something to control boost/fuel/timing etc.

I'm getting a FETD05 on MY99 and mine will be getting mapped.

Dont know much about the chip you have.

Gearboxes are a known weakness with high levels of torque

as long as you are not gonna fit a front mount and change your injectors i think your gearbox will last

oh and speedas he means if you need info start your own thread

Apologies Phil, I wasn't aiming that at you as you were asking what if...

Do a search on the ABC, I dont know who maps them in the UK. Most will probably advise using your standard ECU and going for a TEK remap.

Madgrip

It's a long story but me and Ninnybobs have been having a great time modding our Bugeye's to 350 BHP plus and still have them as a "daily driver" he beats me hands down but I'm next in line for the FMIC, induction kit, headers and the Bob Rawle treatment.

325 BHP.......

TD05 front entry conversion turbo
STi Intercooler
Samco Silicon hoses
Sti Pink Injectors
FSE fuel pump
FSE fuel pump regulator
3 port boost solenoid
EcuTeK 3 Custom re-map by BRD (Bob Rawle) 1.38 bar max
Ported and wrapped headers
NGK PR7 plugs
Haywood and Scott full de-cat
TSL centre section
Magnex oval 6X4 back box
K & N filter
