Default GEMS v MOTEC

Can I take some feedback from anyone running the above management?

Pro's and cons, and anything to watch out for?

Any other alternatives? Pectel?

pectel is expensive and way ott for your spec.

Autronic, gems, motec, dta, OEM, Link,

What year would help... but motec would be my choice.

Sorry David - its UK99 V5 - have Link but "cant" use it anymore (remember mondays phone call?)

I have considered ECUTek'ing the OEM unit but I've decided I'd prefer ALS and LC

Im running GEMS on a uk 99 car with supporting mods, turbo, headers, walbro etc. Its a very good ECU, gives lots of scope for control such as the fan coming in at what temp you set. I have the ALS and water spray connected on mine and it runs sweet if a little thirsty (20MPG). The only problem im having is the idle speed is 1200-1400 at the minute, but thats easily tweeked!!

Thanks Manny - who mapped it for you?

I have supporting mods too:

Headers & System
Pump Reg
Induction
TD05FE

David - why would you recommend Motec to me?

Which motec you thinking of running? if it is the M48 then you won't be able to have any idle speed controll, as there isn't enough outputs for the stepper motor fitted to your car , the m800 would be able to controll the idle speed as it has more outputs . Not too sure on the M400 and 600's.

M400 and M600 have the same ability as M800 to control idle.

M400 is the replacement for the M48 btw

M800 available as an oem "fit in the existing case" ecu for your car, M400/600 only as generic gold boxes with adaptor looms.

Bob, sorry to go away from th topic a bit, whats the best way to map a 95 classic?
Does it mean a costly gems/motec unit or have you experience of different management(cheaper) systems.
I`m not after radically remapping,(std apart from panel filter, full decat) just better fuelling, better optimisation.

Cheers

I Have Gems, It starts first time every time. Idles at 1k, perfectly, even from cold.

It's a little lumpy round the town sometimes, it does better mpg than it did on the standard ecu (if you're not hammering it).

Launch Control is not available for the 99

My only concern is that from idle, when opening the throttle i sometimes get a 'pop' from the inlet side of things

Don't know if this is bad, but sounds it.

Instead of going down the gems/motec route, you should go for Link or more likely, go for something like scoobyecu. So much cheaper.

Richard, you want motec/gems to run AL. But mate, with TD05, you wont be running AL for long

cheers money, but going for a scoobyecu means I have to trust the supplier.
Also how do I tweak the parameters(or someone else do the tweaking?)

GEMS to be different

AL you can set mildly. Not extreme and it will be fine

AL is a waste of time as the standard idle speed control valve doesn't open up far enough to let enough air in.

You really need some kind of external control for cranking opent he throttle when necessary.

For simplicity and convenience if I had your year of car, I wouldn't think of anything other than an ecutek.

The only downside I think is that it still runs the standard and sadly fragile maf sensors.

Aside from that have a word with Pat as to what you really need. My personal prefernce would be anything that runs a wideband ecu, which puts you in M800 territory though I am unfamiliar with the M400 spec.

Was never a fan of the M48 but only because I didn't like the look of the software.

The real experts I have met (people who operate and own dynos) seem to rate pectel and motec above everything else. Since the pectel isn't in your list it looks like motec to me!

the m800 pro is nice but pricey with the wideband option..

all ecus are pricey.. I say motec as its quite nice to use.. apart from pressing enter to change values..

Not quite correct there are a number of people on here who map their own scoobyecu boards.. Delboy2 for example

But yeah you do have to trust the supplier and Ive heard they are really dodgy

You 'dont tweak the parameters' less engine failures that way.. information is available if people know what they are doing.

Don't mean to hijack but I am interested in knowing if there a particular reason that the APexi FC was not mentioned? The programming handset unit comes free with it for less than £700. I am seriously considering one of these for my STI v5.

Gimme, I'm with you.
The FC must give the best value for ££££££££
So many people use it on high end spec engines, EVO's, Scooby's etc it must be a capable bit of kit. Andy F has a sky high reputation and fully understands the car too.
A hill climb friend had an RA with GEMS, FMIC etc and it sounded awful on cold start, had an anti lag, lots of pops and BANGS but the car went quicker without it!
Anyway, to the originator, Richard, wht not try Apexi FC?

I Personally stayed away from the Power FC because it retained the MAF.

And cheers John.

But AndyF has his 'development' pcb to add to the FC?
Not too bothered about the MAF issue, but understand your point.

Hi chaps

Graham - basically I have a non_MAF ECU up until Monday last week when it "failed" therefore I have no MAF.
Motec and GEMS are the other non MAF ECU's I was aware of - I'm in the process of pricing both at the min
