Ever heard a McDonald's clockwork toy running without its feet touching the floor?
Now imagine that sound and not being able to find where it`s coming from.
Now imagine it being connected in some way to to you car.
Now imagine it get more a more irritating the faster you go.

Very annoying I think you will agree. How much more annoying would it be if the noise stops below 10MPH?

This is what is happening to me. The sound is coming from the right hand side of the dashboard and seems to be from behind it as pressure applied to the dash in no way curtails the noise.

Has anyone experienced this at all and in particular in a Legacy.

Any ideas?

HELP!

Please!

I`m going mad!

Didn't mention what car it is? Cos if it's a legacy then that's a a relay.

You may wish to try slackening off the bolts on the boost solenoid a little and see if that helps.

Alternatively, if you have a boost gauge, have you checked it isn't leaking?

Sorry, just re-read and you say it IS a legacy.

The part of the dash you describe (just down and to the right of the steering wheel, below the foglight switches and mirror control) on the older legacies houses the ECU (which I think has relays in for the fan and intercooler pump) and a couple of other external relays. I would suggest it is your ECU or something similar. Does it change with RPMs? At a GUESS I would say it's your radiator fan relay getting stuck or making a switching noise. I =think= that's inside your ECU box (don't quote me on this) but if it suddenly stops at below 10mph or at lower revs then it might be this: you can hear mine switch over once at , about 7mph when the engine is hot, switching off the fans.
If yours is a bit poorly, it might buzz when it is holding open.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Taking the car out this morning I noticed that the McDonalds toy has now become an RC aircraft As I was driving I also noticed that I was doing almost 140MPH Not bad considering I only have a 1.8GL 1990 Legacy

It turns out that up to around 15MPH the speedo seems OK then with rising speed the thing goes balistic and indicates ridiculous speeds. I mean 140MPH @ 2000 revs in 4th WOW! I wish.

Could this be caused by the things previously mentioned?

thanks

mage

PS Is this going to cost me a fortune?

Yup, Speedos can makes all sorts of noises. So that could well be your problem.

The cable could be on its way out, or has been kinked or become partially detached - Presuming that there is one and its not an electrionic type. I'm not sure, don't know a thing about leggys

Ignore my previous suggestion on the boost control soloniod seeing that you don't have one!!

What model Legacy?

Had a similair problem earlier this year (MY99 B4) speedo also started cutting out. Something to do with a wire that needed replacing in the ECU there was also a noticeable clicking noise.
All fixed in less than an hour by Scoobysport.

Cool

If your speedo is driven by an electronic speed sensor, it will say in clear markings at the bottom of the speedo ELECTRONIC. I always wondered why until I found out that imports can have mechanical speedo's, and that the 1992 Legacy Turbos have a mechanical speedo too. Bloomin weird subaru.
