Check Engine light
#1
Cruising nicely at motorway speed, warm engine, recently serviced and driving nicely...
Completely standard UK MY00 turbo...
Check Engine light comes on. No change in engine note, temp steady and normal, nothing funny happening at all.
Drop to 55-60 or so to try and get home...
Light goes off after about a minute, and doesn't come back even after speeding up a bit (carefully!).
Any ideas?

OK, diagnostic code is 32, which is I believe the O2 sensor. From what I can gather reading around the forum, it may not have gone completely, but may just be dirty?
Is it easy to get to/clean? Should I have a crack myself or just wave some cash at the nearest greasemonkey?
Help me Scooby Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope...

And
In retrospest have noticed exhaust pipes looking muckier than before and fuel consumption getting worse - I am assuming this is from the car running richer secondary to oxygen sensor failure.
Will I knacker anything driving like this?
If it does need replacing, how much should an independant garage charge for this?
Anyone recommend anywhere in the Winchester area to do this?
Cheers guys.

Carter,
I've just replied to a similar message about this. I had exactly the same problem with the same year of car. When I looked at the sensor it was caked it crap and the shielding had come off. This meant it was getting showered with road grime through the intercooler vent.
I cleaned it all up carefully with WD40 and a nice clean cloth, then repacked the lining element and sealed it all off. (it's very difficult to get to!)Up to now, no CEL and no problems.
That was nearly six months ago. (currently touching wood!)

just to add my tailpipes are a bit sooty, but that's normal as far as I know.
In terms of the 02 sensor, for info the dealer will charge you approx £180 to supply and fit a new part.
You can however buy a Bosch version for about £40 - the only drawback with this AFAIK is that the wires don't quite match, and a bit of 'modification' is required.

heh
I somehow feel that my first under-bonnet foray shouldn't really be to mess with anything that needs "modifying".
But thanks for the suggestion...

BTW, the only "modification" required for the £40 Bosch sensor involves crimping the plug from the old sensor onto the wires of the new one. It's very easy to do

The connectors are under the dash, next (or maybe taped) to the steering column. You should see two pairs of plugs, one green, one black.
Turn the ignition off, connect the black plugs and turn the ignition back on. The check engine light will flash. If you get an even on/off sequence, that's the okay signal.
If you get a combination of long and short flashes, an error code is being signalled. Long flashes are 10's, short flashes are 1's, so three long, two short =32. You could get more than one code reported, so make a note of everything until the pattern repeats.
The error code key can be found here.
When you're done, turn the ignition off, and either disconnect the black plugs, or connect the green ones in addition and follow the ECU reset procedure above to clear the stored codes.

Hello,
I just had the O2 sensor changed on my MY00, I got it done under warrenty, if your car is still under warrenty get it done. Although now the CEL came on after 100km, and the local Scooby garage is being helpful in trying to sort my "NEW" problem.
Hope you are still covered!

It's out of factory warranty, although it does have a year's RAC from the garage. Will call them. lol @ someone on a similar thread saying "O2 sensors are 3 year/30,000 mile expendables".
