Can my UK MY97 ECU be remapped? I've seen the adpter for pre 97 ECUs on ScoobyShop, but that's no good if I have an MY97. Also an ECUTEK is only for MY99/00 cars. So what are the options for an MY97?

Thumbs up

Theres the Power Engineering Phase 1 conversion. I had this put into my MY97WRX to cure a fuelling prob, not cheap though.

not sure if you can still get the Phase 1 from PE, but I thought there was ECUTEK for 97 cars.

If not then you could look into Link, Motec, Pectel, GEMS. all of which are totally remappable ECU's (Link being one of the most popular) Not cheap (think about £1200 all in, including setup, though don't take my word for that) but if you are planning on modding a lot then it might be worth it in the long run.

no ECUTEK for pre99 cars
but you can put the adapter board in a 97, but the code has to be different - so off the shelf from the ScoobyNet Shop wont work

there is also no header in the ECU, so you need to solder a ribbon cable to the main-board & to the daughter one too. so it's a bit different & not 100% sorted out yet by the DIY-ers amungst us!

best options are (but not in any order)
a) wait a bit for 97 -> DIY .
b) speak to PE. I'm sure they'll still do a conversion. as I'm sure you can still get a PPP'ed ECU from Prodrive/GG etc which is basicly the same, just with a different map.
c) change the ECU totally , to a LINK, GEMS, MOTEC... all ££££ !

Do they do an adapter for a MY98 then? Would quite like to go for the ECUTEK option as I will not want to reprogram etc?

To put everyone straight, the ScoobyEcu offering covers all Imprezas/Legacys from MY92-MY96. ECUTek covers MY99-on.
The only way currently to get the 97/98 JECS ECU remapped in the UK is the PE Phase1 conversion, however, it is being looked into as a DIY remap project.

Andrew is there any way to tell what ECU is fitted by looking at it? Mine is borderline MY96/97 and I'd like to check to know what my options are.

Cheers.

Paul,

The ECU harness connector is a large AMP multiblock type, if there are 4 parts to it then it is Pre-97, if there are 3 (yellow) parts to it then it is a 97/98.

Cheers mate, finally got round to checking this and it looks like a MY97. What are my options here, I have a note of the numbers printed on the label if required.

Here's a pic of the beast:

Paul, that is indeed a std JECS MY97/98 ECU.

If you want to keep the benfits of the std ECU your basic options are: PE Phase1 or Unichip, or wait for a DIY remap offering.

If you are happy to change the ECU then you could go for a Link/GEMS/Motec/Pectel (in approx increasing cost/capability order).

Just remember any changes to ECU are only as good as the person doing the mapping.

This answers the question I just posted in the DIY ECU thread.

It's as if Subaru took a step backwards from the MY96 ECU. Before finaly sorting it out again on the MY99/00!!!

Why did they have to change the ECU for these two years? Is it because of the different turbo?

Hmm think I'll wait for the DIY remap thing to see how that progresses. Can't really justify the cash on a Link etc especially since I'm running a TD04 turbo! Maybe if I decide to go for a VF28 or something in future.

Incidentally how does this ECU respond to more basic tuning like Dawes? What kind of realistic boost can be achieved without raising fuel cut with a TD04 and STi5 TMIC?

As other people have commented the MY97/98 is a kind of Phase 1.5.

A bit of a boost increase is OK so long as you keep an eye on fuelling, however, the combination of TD04 and a smaller than later models i/c means that heat builds up pretty quickly.

I don't consider the ECU design to be a step back from the pre-97 cars, in many ways it is more advanced, and is like the rest of the engine a logical step toward the Ph.2 ECU.

From my perspective when (if) I can get the ECU remapped then I will change the turbo and fuel pump, although I don't think the 380cc injectors will stay too long either.

I've seen the MOTEC in use on PowerStation's own Scoob - very impressive, but VERY expensive with all the little extras!

I have noticed that the AUTRONIC EMS has now come down in price quite a lot. This system (I beleive) is VERY similar to the MOTEC. The guy who makes the Autronic used to work for Motec.

Try this link: http://www.autronic.com/

Note that they do a plug and play unit for the Scoob.

Cheers

Yeah - so I just noticed.
Sorry :'(

Still, it IS cheaper than the MOTEC, and would not cost too much to make a loom!
