I can understand an electronic or mechanical gauge being a little wrong, however, I find it difficult to believe that Subaru are stupid enough to cut a strip of metal to the wrong length and no one notice for a few years
BTW, I changed the oil in my Scoob (MY96) at the weekend, and poured in 4.5 litres of oil (according to the scale on the oil bottle), and it sat just below the "full" indicator on the dipstick.

I overfilled mine last time - it's very easy to do, as there seems very little tolerance of oil level. Hope you have let some oil out and cleaned the solenoid with brake cleaner

It can be a bit of a bitch reading the oil level using the dipstick.
The way I have been told to do it is to firstly make sure the oil can symbol on the dipstick handle is the right way up, then take the reading on the flat side that has the letters stamped on it.
Apparently you can get different readings if its done another way.

i too have noticed the level on mine MY99 was low after getting it back from the dealers after engine rebuild so questioned it and got the reply back it is ok to run just above the low mark to stop over boosting and the oil level has never moved since, also some engines will find their own level. start worrying if you fill it up to the top mark i.e full not the notch and in a couple days it all disappears :O

It's just behind the air box on the right hand wheel arch. There's pictures on another thread. Try searching for something along the lines of "boost solenoid cleaning"

Apparently it takes quite a while for oil to flow down the filler pipe to the sump, so if a reading is taken soon after filling up, it will show up as low and lead to overfilling by inexperienced mechanics. To be consistent, maybe take readings only with cold engine when checking oil levels.

RTFM The proper procedure for checking level is described.
When doing oil/filter change, always crank the engine without spark (removing crank sensor connector I *think* ensures no bore wash while doing this) until oil light goes out.
