Is it a japanese import? What year? If so then there is a chance that that's true. If it's a euro model then no is the answer. All the euro models will run happily (if a little down on power) on 95 octane.
I've just had the PPP fitted and there's a station in Malahide that still does 97octane so I'm switching but it's a pain in the **** to find places in Dublin that still have it.
Having said that I would still think that the Japanese cars can adjust enough to cater for 95octane. Are you running higher boost or any other mods?

Petrol-Head did you mean they arent the same ? Because they arent, its not just a matter of strapping a turbo to it. Running NUL in a NA sport would be fine. You may get a smoother and more mpg out of SUL/optimax though.

UK cars have a map catering for the poorer detonation resistant 95 RON, Jap imports don't.
A RON rating just dictates the fuel's resistance to det - while this is not a huge issue on NA cars, as soon as you start forcing air/fuel into the chamber things get hotter, much hotter....det is always just around the corner, especially if you start modifying your car.
I think Subaru should have provided an AFR and knock warning lamp as OE equipment......
