Default Budget Crank pulley locking tools..

Hi All, been looking at ways to remove the crank pulley, and need to hold it 1st, so as the proper tool is way more money than I can justify spending, I was wondering if anyone here has thoughts or experience of the ones pictured... cheers!

1ft breaker bar, handle wrapped in a rag and wedged on passenger side chassis leg. Crack the starter motor for quarter of a second. Works for me.

That or a Makita DTW1002Z impact wrench (need to remove radiator first)....1000nm can get one for £200 without batteries (Makita 3Ah battery can be had for around £45. Get second hand charger off ebay.

Hi thanks for the suggestion, though mine's a MY99 Impreza Wagon and it doesn't seem to have that chassis leg of which you speak...what do you do to retighten?

Well, put it this way... I can't see anything that I can wedge or rest a breaker bar on except the battery tray, but then I'd have to remove the battery. Got a pic to help me 'get' it?

put it in gear , put a broom handle or similar on the brake pedal and wedge the seat against it to keep it there and then undo the pulley ,, very easy ,, I do these on my own all the time without needing any locking tools or anything

It's alongside/under the battery tray. Also it sticks out a bit in front of the battery. There's two 19mm bolts that hold the bumper bar in also.

Thanks Guys! Really appreciating all your tips and guidance! Am waiting for a 22mm 6-sided socket to arrive by post... (couldn't buy one in the whole of Leicester) then I'll give it a go. 👍

In the end, I did it this way. Removed the battery, which I placed on the ground and connected up with jump leads, and put a piece of 22mm pipe insulation around the breaker bar handle. Crossed everything and......

Success!

With the greatest of respect,to the OP, are you saying that you don't have the resources or funds to pay for a £75 Crankshaft Locking Tool?

These cars are expensive to own and maintain and I may be a little presumptuous and assume you pay a load for insurance and 18" wheels and bling, etc so how does £75 seem expensive?

These tools are great value when you consider the damaged eqpt and unhurt fingers they save, etc.

£75? I was trying to work around having to pay £38 for an ICP one seeing as I'd probably never need to use it again. Car's an MY99, bling, it's not. But fair comment!

I personally have no problems paying for tools to do jobs properly but even I wouldn't consider spending that much for what is essentiality a metal bar with some holes drilled and tapped. ICP one is almost identical and much cheaper and even that I had a hard time spending the money on. OP's car looks like a SOHC non turbo version to me too.

Well, I've done 50% of the task for free and just a little extra time, and I've found this excellent idea for the other 50%, from the RS25 forum, for £6, for the wood + some long bolts

Thought it worth sharing here in case anyone else is looking for a budget solution too...

If you need to change the following then you'll need the Crank Pulley off:

Timing Belt
Timing Belt Pullies or Tensioners
Water Pump
Oil Pump
Front Crank seal
Head Gaskets

Do one of those and the tool instantly become worth the value to put into it.

The home made options aren't pretty but will do the job so fair play to you!
