Default Oil leak AGAIN!

Hi All

so upset!

had gaskets half moons etc changed on both sides!

parked up and have noticed several oil spots! Was on the motorway so it’s basically coated the gearbox etc.

not happy. Garage closed until Tuesday.

I think it could be the gasket but what else

1 Rocker cover gasket
2 rear crank
3 front crank

it’s definitely engine oil. I’ll have a look tomorrow

I changed the pvc valve only a few days ago

please help....

Should be obvious for a garage to spot where the oil was coming from in the first place , anyway jack the car up look under the rocker covers both sides you will see straight away if there leaking

Not saying they haven't been fitted but it's easy to mess up ! You need to make sure the surfaces are spotless !! And use threebond sparingly , also torque the bolts up and use new seals on the bolts , if there definitely not leaking then it's most likely the rear main seal ,oil separator plate but you will see it drip from between the gearbox and engine , you need to jack up and look , if it was leaking elsewhere that bad then you would expect any decent garage to tell you at the time ,

i am hoping it’s their bad workmanship.

I’d assume that it being only done last week they’d fix it if it the gaskets.

But if it was the crank or oil separator I don’t think I’d have oil so far forward as dripping on the oil filter looks like it’s come down from above side

when I checked the plastic chamber last week under the intercooler there was no oil inside which led me to believe it shouldn’t be the crank

A thought it was all over the gearbox ? Sounds like you have a few leaks , must be oil in your undertray if you have one ? , Front of the engine you have cam seals , oil pump ,crank seal , oil modine ,filter , , you need to get it into the garage ask to see under it could be anything

Try nipping the bolts from the side

they might not have tightened them properly this has happened to someone I know before pissed out oil everywhere not enough prep and laziness

I guess it’s pretty pointless posting on a thread about this when you’re not looking and getting it looked at but it could be the oil cooler seal if it’s leaking that bad. That’s a pretty big leak for rocker covers.

Thanks guys. I had a look when I parked it up on Sunday. But tbh I was to annoyed to look at it again going back to the garage to review later this week.

I did have a look. But looked like it was from the original source as it had the same pattern

i hope it’s something that can be inexpensively.

it was only repaired some 100 miles ago and would have been the first time to have tested the repair

Slight update

Garage has had a look said it’s not the rocker cover gaskets.

suggesting it could be the rear crank. Clutch isn’t slipping! They don’t do engine/box out jobs.

I will be taking it to another garage next week to be diagnosed.

Considering it lost around 4-500ml of oil in 200ish miles the inspection hatch below the i/c should be full of oil?

No the oil just falls out the bottom , if it was possible to fill up it would be like a washing machine full of oil ,here's a pic of mine apart

you need to find a decent garage that works on Subaru's

Thanks

I though If the rear crank is failing you’d have oil under the i/c inspection chamber

also I had a drop of oil on the oil filter don’t know how it’d end up there if the rear crank was leaking...

Stupid question I know but I was thinking of cleaning the bottom of the car

if I was to run the car stationary would it build up enough heat/pressure to leak as it seems it leaked after a hard drive?

Sounds a quirky garage if they don't do engine out stuff. Best bet is to get it down to a specialist

eh?

why would I be trolling FFS! Think you’ve misunderstood what I wrote there.

I was saying it’s pretty pointless me guessing at what’s wrong when he’s taking it back to be looked at but ‘here’s my guess’

I've had a similar problem with mine for months. I was convinced it was the rear main oil seal but hoped it wasn't so decided to do all the things it could be other than the rear main. firstly I re sealed the sump but this didn't fix it so I thought maybe cam seals or oil pump seal even though there didn't appear to be much oil on the bottom of the timing covers. I removed the drivers side outer timing cover and there didn't seem to be any oil leaking from behind the cam pulleys but I thought what the hell I've started stripping it down now I may as well carry on. Removed all covers, timing belt and cam pulleys. Low and behold every seal seemed to be leaking a small amount. removed oil pump and removed all seals. All seals were hard and brittle and cracked when pressed. I replaced all 4 cam seals, oil pump o ring and seal and re sealed the oil pump. put everything back together and now no oil leak.
The oil would always accumulate on the bottom of the bellhousing leading me to believe it was coming from that area. Might be worth having a look. Only cost about 20 quid for all genuine seals.

Thanks for all the comments guys

so got it back and the verdict is still out.

could be rear seal but could be the sump hard to tell unfortunately.

I am dropping it off next week and let’s see what happens

i am planning to steam clean this weekend let’s see....
