Default Ej 20 cam looking tool

So about to do my cam belt kit change and seller has ripped me off for the cam holding tool 😡 , is it really needed ? A know the right side cam may spin slightly , will this be ok if I realign it ? Cheers

Just align the five marks and away you go. Try as many times as you need to it'll be dead on.

Think it's the top right pulley as you look at the engine from the cam belt side that is under tension when all the marks are aligned, did mine a couple of years ago and pretty sure it rotated anti clockwise about a third of a turn once the belt was off. Don't take that as gospel though, this was on a standard EJ20 on a classic with no AVCS.

Just took the left hand timing cover off and there's oil in there ☹️ need to buy a cam pulley tool now do the seals was trying to avoid that

Could always take the rocker covers off and check for spanner flats on the cams. Don’t think every car has them but my 02 WRX engine did. The cam bolts will probably be Fing tight so make sure you have some long cheater/breaker bars to hand.

Tryed using the belt to hold the pulley but it jumped a couple of teeth ,gave in ordered company 23 pulley holding tools
