Default Cam belt tool?

I have just put my 02 WRX in for a cam belt just to be safe even though its only done 30000, and the garage I took it to stripped it today to put the new one on but couldnt get one of the pulleys off and they said that they needed a special tool which they didnt have.

do you need a special tool to change the cam belt??

Does anyone have one?

They said I could have the car back until they can find the tool and re book it in but Im not happy having the car back with the old belt on if they have already taken the tension off it once , i just know what the result would be with my luck!!!!

Help folks please

The only pulley that needs taking off is the crank pulley for the alternator belt, 22mm socket and a breaker should remove the bolt and then you just need to pull the pulley off, none of the cam wheels/idlers need to be removed bar the tensioner which has to be compressed before it can be refitted. Unless they're on about the cam locking tool that keeps everything aligned with the timing marks whilst the old belt is off and stops the cams from moving.

Stick it in fifth, handbrake on real tight should do it. May have to shock the bar to just break the stiction between the bolt head and pulley.

Thanks buddy I have just rang him and he will crack on with it in the morning, he still insists that a special tool should be used but by the sounds of it "your da man" as they say, thanks again!

You can use two 10 or 12mm (40/50mm long) bolts on the holes of the pulley and lock them up with a tyre lever or similar. This then allows the bolt to be undone while the crank is held solid.

There are other ways aswell.

My concern for you is that the crank pulley is no different to any other car. So if your man cant undo it,Is he gonna be able to do the belt change properly?

Does he know about compressing the tensioner in a vice?etc.

The Tensioner should be compressed in a Press(upright) - the earlier one's can be done in the Vice.

As merlin24 says, but be careful not to over compress as this can cause it to leak.
