Having probs with a 95 WRX import. It has become prone to stalling when warm- and will not start until cold. It seems to be getting progressively worse.

I've cleaned the MAF and checked everything i can think of- but am now a bit stuck!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
simon

A number of owners I know from the Australian and USA boards have had similar problems and IIRC, they had to have the Crankshaft Position Sensor replaced. The car would be impossible to start as long as the sensor is still hot, some people have tried all sorts of thing and surprisingly they work eg put ice on the sensor! At this point, i dont think melting ice would make it any worse that it already is.

one thing i forgot from my original post;
the car starts fine when cold but also start with no problems when it's hot after a good run.

however it's prone to stalling when warming up, and if it does you can forget starting it until it cools right off again.

the plot thickens.....

thanks for all your help guys,
simon

Simon

The crank position sensor problem is only common on the new shape WRX.

On your 95, I would suspect the water temp sensor.

I thought there'd been quite a few CPS failures too that could cause this? Nimbus' car leaps to mind, and there were others. It caused my old Renault 19 16v to not start FWIW. But that was a renault, so...

Mind you, I guess you might have just a little bit more experience than me in this matter

Thumbs up

Hello RRH

Look at the following site www.geocities.com/subman2001nz/ and click on reading ECU's - you could check your car yourself that way to confirm (Thanks to HELLOM8 in one of the lower threads for bringing this up).

I have a MY95WRX which had the same problem - stalled at the traffic lights in the rain, kids in the back, wouldn't start .... had no warning of a problem. Would just stall without warning and not start again until it cooled down. Changed the water temp sensor and problem solved.

Good Luck

Jo

A change of crank position sensor cured this on my car which is a 1995 UK model.
