Standard engine rebuild
Hi all,
How much (just looking for a ballpark figure) would a full standard rebuild cost? Currently my engine is in good working order with no knocking, bangs, anything... I'm just concerned with the mileage it sits on that has made me ask this question.
I'm not after anything special, just want to freshen up a higher mileage engine with the usual wear and tear. Back to basic spec, nothing more, but replaing worn bits ready for another 100k miles.
I know I'm assuming a rather heavy chunk of monies, and things could range from one end of the scale to the other, but most guys on here would know the average cost of having a basic rebuild (or some of the guys who've blown engines in the past might?).
What would you say I'm looking at? £1k, £2k, £3k+ etc
Cheers

My classic is on 158k has fsh and sounds barely 50000 old. I had an 1800 engine (not from scoob) rebuilt which cost £2200 with a new clutch cos the crank was rattling about. That was rebuilt to standard spec but needed new pistons new bearing and the block was shot. All depends how(if) the engine goes bang. If a rod goes through the block or a bearing twists. Hope that helped a little.

Cheers Stu, but I'm really not all that fussed about big numbers, I just enjoy driving it and that I know its running well etc..... Which at the mo it is. the mileage is on 140k (I think, haven't driven it for a good 6months) so I need to consider it happening sometime soon. I also think the g/box will need doing too so possibly looking at 6speed to replace the 5.
Ad, what did Dan do? lol
ScoobyColin, thanks the advise, your totally right on 'how' the engine decides to go, I didn't think of that. But that does make me think that to have a standard rebuild to an engine that isn't broke and just needs freshening up would be cheaper?

I'd still go with "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Rather than standard rebuild its still working, put that money away for a forge rebuild instead. By the time the car needs a rebuild you'll have the money there to make a smashing engine. Stay on top of your servicing and she'll last you plenty yet.
