Question

ok yet another Dawes thread but this one is with a twist. I was wondering normally what you do is set the dawes to increase boost. Now please correct me if I'm wrong, because of the increased volume of air the ecu throws more fuel at the engine... is the reverse true? if I set it so the wastegate opens almost immediately giving me almost no positive boost would the ecu reduce the amount of fuel? I fully understand this would poleaxe performance but on those long motorway journeys you could turn your car into a sport and the assosiated fuel economy!

please shoot me down in flames

You would only get down to about 8 PSI minimum which is the wastegate actuator spring strength. How about just using less right foot?

Dizzy,
I can do the same on my Evo due to the advantage of having an electronic boost controller.
I run 0.7 bar when pootling around town and on the motorway and then turn it up to whatever I fancy when going for a blast
You do save fuel but only when you are booting it as that is when the boost is limited.

The main probelm you will find is that when you have the boost turned down, you inveitably get passed by someone in a scooby/evo and you want to turn up the boost to keep with them This would be a bit tricky with a Dawes!!!!! (I can just imagine travelling along the motorway with my better half hanging onto the bonnet trying to adjust a Dawes on the move )

Motorway = constant speed = turbo doesn't come into play (except if you drive at very high speeds 120mph+, when wind drag becomes at bit much)
Mild "acceleration" (hills etc) takes boost to about 0.4 bar (if you drive smoothly)
Wastegate opens at what? 0.6 bar?
Only fuel you'll save is during acceleration.

Now John, don't be blaming the car for 14-16mpg, you admitted that your wife can achieve 30mpg out of it. Must be that lead weight in the sole of your right foot huh!

My wife is not testing it to see how high she can get the intake temperatures to go though Kenny

Moses I think you mean an AFC? (remaps MAF sensor so a fuel computer).

John, maybe you should get her to put up a masterclass posting: 'How to get 30+ mpg out your scooby' If people paid attention Shell, Esso and BP wouldn't know what hit them

Dizzy,
We sell an inexpensive, OEM solenoid that can help you out. Using it and a switch you provide, you can route the boost signal directly to the wastegate or through the controller. Keep in mind that if you run lower boost, but rev the engine out to make up the difference, your mileage will remain about the same. Hope this helps.
