Post Rear Drive Shafts Popping Out

Hello

I’ve been having ongoing drive train issues with my 98 Type-R for the past year (since I bought it).

I am on my 3rd rear diff and at the weekend replaced my gearbox after being told that I’d blew the centre diff (from a Scooby specialist). After replacing the box I tested it – and my heart sank when it reacted in the same way as before I’d changed the box. Best way to describe it was like the clutch slipping. Which is how it was every other time I thought the rear diff had gone. I jacked her back up again and on closer inspection of the driveshaft I noticed the passenger side one was not engaged correctly with the diff. I then noticed that I am able to by-hand dislocate the drive shaft from the diff !!!

This is when I think a big penny dropped with me – 3 diffs and 1 gear box later.

So my question to the experts is – do I have the wrong or broken driveshaft fitted – or is there a snap ring which is used to secure the driveshaft to the rear diff.

I think when I’ve been giving it the beans the diff has simply spat the drive shafts out – that’s my theory anyway.

BTW: I don’t have an R180 diff fitted even though it’s a type-R. It’s a 1998 which I believe did not have the R160 or R180 when they first came out. It has a 4.444 ratio and does not have the DCCD.

Im sure they have a rollpin through the end of drive shaft that goes on the gear it sits on, it should just line up then knock the pin through, i suppose if someone has replaced them in the past they could have forgot to put the pins in, but reading through if you personally changed the diffs you will know about the pins? just a thought pal because i guess it could pop out lightly with out the pins, but im sure someone who knows more about them will correct me

hope that helps

Thanks for your reply leedscal..

I've changed the diff that many times now I can do it blind folded lol But every time I've done it I've never noticed any snap rings or split pins. Thing is the drive shafts do into the diff and thus I can't see how it can be secured in.

Sorry - iIt's worth mentioning that I cant dislocate the driver side rear driveshaft - which make me think the passenger one is snookered.

Check if there is a split pin fitted. It runs through the spline where the shaft joins the diff.
Why will the shaft not come out of the passanger side. Is it stuck in the hub or will it not pull off the diff?

Didn't the 98 have an R180 rear diff as standard?

It sounds to me like someone has changed the rear diff and they haven't used matching driveshafts because there different rear driveshafts depending on the diff used.

There are no "pins" in the rear diff/shafts. There are circlips on each shaft though which hold the shaft in the diff.

+1 above, there are sprung circular clips located about 7mm back from the very end of the shaft's end in a recess which stop the shaft from coming back out of the diff.
Check that it has them on m8 and if not replace and your problem should be solved

Also, check out if aftermarket lateral arms have been fitted.
I had fitted some, and they were a smidge longer then the stock ones, pushing the wheels out, and stretching the axles a bit longer.
On full bore cornering the suspension movement caused the axle on the opposite side of the corner to come out.(so on a hard left the right axle came out and vice versa)
Maybe the previous owner did the same, or had a small off and fitted WRX lateral arms (if tha tis possible)
