whining noise from upfront when warm
Hi guys, just bouncing this off anyone that might know
when driving car for a few miles, I get a whining noise that goes in sync with wheel speed not engine speed, Ive been told its not a wheel bearing from a guy who did my clutch last week, but then he had it from cold so to speak, any ideas chaps?
Car is a Uk Impreza 2000 turbo 1999

Hi Mate
Had the same thing..... If it sounds like its coming out of the radio (general area) theres a good chance its the bearings on the center diff assy at the back of the box. If you get whats known as transmission wind up (ie after a longish journey when you turn into a parking space or thight turn the car seems to struggle to move thats wind up) you will need to replace the center diff assy as well as the 2 bearings that go into the rear casing of the box.
First the good news - the gearbox does'nt need removing to do this it can all be done in situe You have to remove the rear prop , gear linkage and gearbox mounts then the back of the box can be removed by undoing the ring of bolts around it.
The bad news - Its going to cost about £600 - £650 in bits depending on what oil you use.. You will need the center diff assy (which comes with a bearing) the 2 bearings in the rear casing ( if poss strip and check these bearings first as only one of mine had gone) the gearbox casing gasket ( this must be replaced because this helps set the preload for the bearings ect) and 4.5 - 5 litres of 75W90 synthetic gearbox / diff oil.
It would have taken me about 2 hours to do mine if Sparshatts hadn't supplied the wrong bearings and gasket to start with. This was with air tools and a lift but I had never done one before but did have plenty of advise (Simon @ Merdon motors 01489877431 ex top tech with Subaru) . No special tools are reqd just a press to change the bearings on the shafts.
