Question

I'm needing to do my first oil change and wondering which oil is best. The car is a 1996 STi 2 with 50,000 miles on the clock. I live in the country, so as soon as the car has heated up I drive it pretty hard. It hasn't even seen a traffic jam yet and I've done about 2,000 miles so far! The previous owner put in Mobil 1 for the last 3 oil changes. Is that what everyone has found to be best?

Cheers

Question

Hi Trout

Is Motul very expensive and do you know if there is anywhere on-line to buy it?

Thumbs up

Somthing fairly thick- normal mobil1 is engine flush, i agree, but mobil1 motorsport is much thicker, thatl do, castrol rs 0w60 was the best but now they changed it to thin *** flushing oil too.

I have just changed to Motul 300V Competition 15W50, from "flushing oil". My non expert opinion is it appears thicker and smells quite nice

As for the price......how much do you spend on petrol??????

The two most recommended oils by the techies, both fully synthetic are, Castrol RS 10W/60, or Motul 300V 15W/60 with a genuine subaru oil filter. A 0W based oil should not be used because it is considered too thin for the scooby engine. You should fill up the oil filter and apply some oil with your finger around the lip of the filter before fitting. All these steps help lessen the chances of failure.

For some more info regarding this topic, read these 3 threads, which talk about main bearing failure and then go on to talk about the best oils for our Scoobs. Some of the best techies have posted in these threads.

Colin,

Motul is about the same price as Mobil 1 Motorsport - you can get it from Demon Tweeks.

As a reference just check out those Motul stickers on Tommi's Scoob! (and many other heavy duty motorsport cars, oh and just about every high performance bike)

Sounds familiar, when a company I worked for was getting bought over and all of us were surplus to requirements, I bought £200 of oil over 5 weeks on my fuel card.

Good deal.

Cool

Excellent info guys!

Thanks for the links to the threads Wrexy.

Think I'll go for the Motul.

Don't know if I can stoop to buying from tweeks though, Trout - they don't know it yet but they are my competition and I will be as big as them some day!!

Cheers

Colin !

Hi All,
I was speaking to a friend who owns a performance workshop here in Perth and that previously owned a WRX. I was complaing about how within 1-2 weeks of changing oil the engine started getting real noisy again (You just gotta luv listening to your engine going click click click click... ). He told me that Mobil 1 is too thin for the Scoob engine and that when he used to have his WRX he used to put a lot thicker oil in. I don't know if he was joking but he suggested putting diesel engine oil in and said the only thing he ever used Mobil 1 for was to put in his gearbox ;P
Anyone got any thoughts on this idea of using diesel engine oil and Mobil 1 for the gearbox?
Tony
