GEARBOX NOISE / OIL CHANGE
Hi all
I have a bit of a whine starting on what sounds like the gearbox. It sounds like a wheel bearing but when driving at around 50mph and knock it into neutral the noise stops.
Im going to change the gearbox and diff oil and put some molyslip in to see if that helps.
After spending a while searching about on here I think im meant to use the following
Front diff and gearbox 75w90
Rear diff 85w90
Im not sure if the rear diff has to have a different type of oil as im not sure what type of diff I have
It’s a 94 jdm wrx and has a gearbox number TY752VB3AA
Can any one advise me please?

I've always heard that rear diff and gearbox use the same oil - 75w90. Although I'm running fully synth stuff (which is to thin) I will change it for the very recommended Castrol Syntax.
Sorry, cant help with what diff you have though...

If your car has its original gearbox and rear diff, then you can use 75w90 oil to do both. You'll need 5 litres in total for the job

sorry to bump and hi-jack this thread.
Im 'Babysitting' my brothers WRX JDM impreza at present and he mentioned before he went away that it was 'whineing' a little when moving. It goes into gears no problem so i am of the opinon that the box fluid may be low.
Going by the above details, the gearoil isnt a problem, (does it have to be synth?) but i wa wondering exactly how much to put in each one, and is it easy enough to do on a driveway?
Its a 1993 model.
Cheers

yes it is easy enough but when changing the rear diff oil make sure the top bolt comes off before the bottom (drain) bolt otherwise you could be in a bit of trouble if the top one wont come undone,,just refill from top hole, gearbox dipstick is under intercooler and oil is filled from here.

erm.. embarassing update.
Finally found the Trans Dipstick. It was hidden under the Intercooler and had been blocked in since the engine had been rebuilt. This means that i cant actually get the dipstick out of the tube without removing the intercooler first, so that is tonights first project!
