Default Clunking and whinning??

Over the last few weeks MY99 uk turbo has developed a clunking when the wheels are turned in either direction, it seems to be on every rotation of the wheels that there is a shudder. Also after the car has been driven for around 10 mins, giving it time to warm up, there is a constant whinning noise whether it is in gear or out of gear.
After giving it to my mates garage to look at he said that the drive shafts were like a **** in a sock going into the box. Will this produce the problem that i am explaing and if so is it a case of buying a new box or can i get it refurbed. Cheers Mike

Hmm Similar problem to mine. Will be interested in the replies.
Mine seems to be front right but just clunking with wheel rotation.
Having the wheel off tomorrow to have a look.
Mine smells of driveshaft or a joint or something.
Definitely worse when warm like yours though.

I've got a very similar problem, started about 4 months ago on and off and has gotten progressively worse- coming from LHS. It started as a bit of a clattering sound when turning to the right slightly (noise etc went when turning sharper), but has now progressed to a bad 'metal on metal' sqeaking and grinding! At first I suspected a CV joint, but it could be a wheel bearing or worse! Taking the car in for a check this afternoon, so fingers crossed. It's only done 45K miles and has never been ragged, so was very unexpected. Same '**** in a sock' issue with driveshafts too when I had a look underneath last week, but same on both sides...
