Default Tappet noise all the time...HELP

As above...what is happening. It never used to do this and the oil hasn't been changed that long ago. Oil level was okay a few days ago. Is is gonna cause any serious problems? J-reg Legacy turbo (old banger).

Any other advice please.

Thanks

Mine does that when shes just getting warm, then goes away. I don't think its much to worry about unless its really noisy. i think someone said if you change the oil to a thicker grade then it quietens them.

I havnt changed the oil in mine yet as i havn't had it long, but when i do i may some motul 300V or something?

Cheers

Hmm thats odd, what grade oil do you use and how many miles has she done? Perhaps shes just getting more sensitive as she gets on a bit

Similar on my 96 UK Impreza, I think the tappets are the same or similar.. when it was serviced by the dealer they used semi synthetic all and it tapped like map.,. I tried Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W50 and it was quieter just after changing but after a couple of thousand miles started to come back..

Switched to Motul 300v Competition 15W50 which was recommended as one of the best oil for the engine and tappets are quiet.. car now has 148,400miles and tappets are silent.
Cheapest place at the moment I think is www.camskill.com

I use Millers Fully Synthetic 10W60. A Subaru Specialist said that because I am running at higher boost the engine needs more protection. I was going to get Motul 10W50 but he said that the grade would not provide enough protection? By the way he does not sell me the Millers. So do you reckon I should try the Motul?

By the way thanks for all the helpful replies guys

I would expect Millers to be okay.. could try Motul at next change. Motul is more than upto the job by the way.. Mobil 1 is not. So perhaps the tappets are just worn out then.

imho of course.

Bloody loud injectors then!!! Thanks for all the input. So shall I try Motul. Costs an arm and a leg doesn't it? I'm not being funny about the injector suggestion...I appreciate any input...So thank JGM.

don't worry too much about the noise. frequent oil changes with reasonable oil I have found to clear the problem in about 3 oil changes. My legacy used to tap something cronic, but then it just slowly dissapeared until I never had a problem with it.

I used to run 10/40 oil in mine at about the 280hp level and it was fine. I used to change it every 4000 miles or so with a filter. Motul is good oil, as is Amsoil and Redline fully synthetics, not heard much about the millers though.

it's possible to get an airlock in them, and they can be a pain. You should try a lighter oil too, 40-50 grade. The thick oil can restrict oil pressure at the furthest reaches of the engine.

Paul

So is Fully Synthetic okay to use say 10W50? Also while I'm on the subject...when I'm driving the car quite hard the exhaust pops and bangs is that okay or what?

15/50 fully synth is going to be fine. but I do not consider mobil 1 in the same leage as the Motul or Redline oils.

Just to update this post, my car has been getting increacingly tappety just recently, anyway i changed all the oils for Motul, and guess what........it wont stop doing it now, hot or cold! So i'm at a loose end really, now way am i going to flush £50 quids worth of oil down the drain so i guess im just going to have to live with an engine that sounds like an old fiesta for a while!

Cheers

I have been driving a 227000 mile Legacy turbo that has quite bad tappet noise intermittently, hasn't done it any harm, just makes a noise. I have sourced some 98 heads though to go on a 2.5 block for this car to freshen it all up.

to stop the knocking try putting abit of oil stabiliser in by lucas bout £15 bottle or greased lightening do small bottles, 2 of these will suffice. put it in and you shouldn't here the noise again. It works for me, i add it to my motul, i think the problem is that the oil is too thin even though its meant to be as its fully synthetic, still get good oil pressure, no noise and never a squeek on start up when cold.

just my tuppence worth.

If your so concerned, I would be tempted to fit an oil pressure gauge...even just as a temporary fitment by borrowing one. It's just a case of swapping the oil pressure switch (under the alternator) for a gauge fitting.

Then at least you can find out if your noisy tappets is oil pressure related, or you tappets are knackered, or possibly blocked feed holes.

Well i've just added some ZX1 extralube stuff, and this morning there was no tappet noise, so perhaps it was just after the oil change?

Like you say Ali i'm hugely tempeted with an oil pressure gauge, i think there well worth it!

Cheers
