hi there
i have just had the car on track for the first time since the last couple of mods, ie FMIC and ported exhaust manifolds.

however, water temperature on the link tuning module is reached 102 degrees from the normal 86 degrees that i normally get on the road.

what are you guys getting, with standard intercoolers and link ecu, i never really checked before this. one thing worth mentioning though the standard water temperature gauge in the car did not seem to move from the normal position at all. ( it must be a very senstive piece of kit!! )

is this normal track temps ? or is it way off.

the car was running 1.35 bar, inlet charges 42 degrees

thanks in advance

sam

Sam,

That's very high, slightly higher than my last time on the track, but then, my head gasket had gone......

Assuming your water level was ok, and you hadn't lost any, I suspect the higher temps are due to the FMIC restricting the rad'.

Fit an oil cooler, and try Water Wetter, as someone suggested, and hope you don't need to upgrade your rad'.

Question

Sam - I think that might not be best for the head - correct me if I'm wrong but high water temps aren't good for head longevity
What oil temp do you get, I get up to 110 on a really hot day (track, thats running 1.2 bar on LINK but with TMIC

Sam,

High temps were due to the head gasket going.
From the Motec datalog, I was hitting about 100deg'C, and 118deg'C while it was "supposed" to be idling down

Some comparitive road figures for you Sam.

Just got in following a "fast motorway dash" up the M5 and along the M4 from a family gathering, was monitoring my water temps as I am doing some some development work on the new Link chip, so using Link I was getting 80-82 deg C, if I ran with boost at 0.4 bar max for a few minutes (told you it was a dash) then the most I saw was 84 deg C, I would get very similar temps with Motec, a slightly slower "dash" would show temps of 78-80 deg C.

Charge air max at 28 deg C, oil temp max 105 deg C, egt (after turbo) max at 675 deg C, oil pressure 6.5 bar.

If you have the under engine tray it may be worth removing it for track days and opening the bonnet vents as well. from memory its 4 X 8mm bolts per blanking plate, you keep the bonnet vents in place.

Sam, I remember from pictures you posted a couple of weeks ago that your intercooler is BIG and occupies most of the front space.
Is there any brand that has a design that doesn't take the whole front space maybe just the 50-60% and still proves to be good enough.
On the first Subaru WRC's the FMIC was not the same size as the radiator it was smaller and only took half of the front space.

the intercooler cover the bottom section of the radiator, the top half is free.

thanks for the info bob. the only thing though is all the figures i get for road driving are ok. it is only on track after 15-20mins that things get a bit hot .

i will be trying water wetter, first and see what i get on the 15th of september. otherwise it will be oil cooler time.

has anyone tried this EWP pumps ?

sam

Hi,

One possible solution is to mount sti waterspray to front intercooler, I have adapted one to my scooby. I did not have any problems on coolant temperature rising, just power after every gear change. MRT do a smart water spray kit which is identical to the STI version if not better. It uses to sensors from the engine bay. One from the coolant temperature and one from the boost level. Once both have met the user set limits it activates the waterspray and its makes a hell of a difference. Only draw back is filling up the washer bottle. Or if you have any spare squid buy the boot mounted tank!!!.
