Int Boost Pressure
#1
I have a 1994 WRX, which has had a problem with it for months now. I sent it off to a Subaru specialist who failed to find the problem. For some reason the actuator opens the waste gate early. It works one day and not the next. The boost gauge I have fitted shows, when it runs properly the waste gate pressure is set for .75 bar but intermittently it drops to .5 bar. What controls the actuator ? why should it intermittently decide to open at .5 bar.
Please help before I torch it !!!!!

Perry,
It sounds to me like the previous owner had a boost controller fitted and this has caused problems.
I see you are in Chippenham - if that is the one in Wiltshire, I would recommend contacting Bob Rawle who is in Malmesbury - see

Dont discount the ECU, if you know someone with a same model year swap the ECUs and seee if it clears.
i had just that fault on my MY93 and a new ECU cured it.
Try it, its an easy, quick check.

Cheers for the good advice guys.
I've had the car for around 9 months now and for the last 6 months I've been battleing with this problem. I tried a new fuel filter, full service, ECU reset ( which does work for the first day or so ). Then I bit the bullet and took it to Central Subaru, in Wolverhamton. I used them as they had been recommended to me. Anyway they had it for a week and tried a few things inclusding a ECU swap and ended up replacing 2 coil packs and the ignition module. Again the first few days it was back to it true livly self but soon returned to somewhat flat state again. The guys there are a little confused and as it is over 100 miles away I cannot efford to just pop in. I might try to see if the guys at

Hi Perry,
Do an ECU diagnostic and see if it returns any error code. If it does and the code is 44, it's your wastegate control solenoid.
If you want to disconnect your boost gauge temporarily, locate the t-piece where it taps from the manifold (usually), and close it with a rubber stopper.
Hope you can solve your problem soon. Cheers!

I had exactly the same symptoms as this, sometimes mine only pulled 0.5-0.6 bar boost,
other times it pulled normal boost.
couldn't work it out at all, everthing appeared fine,no fault codes etc.
turned out to be a slit in the turbo inlet pipe....
don't overlook the turbo/intercooler pipes just because it doesn't do it all the time
