The filter was changed because Subaru have changed the supplier, you can fit either.

I Read this on an American site, hope that helps.

Question

Hi all,

I just received 3 new oil filters for my JDM STI7. The old part# is 15208AA024 and the new ones I received have part#'s of 15208AA080. The new filters are black and not blue like the old ones and also they are smaller. Does anyone know if Subaru made an oil filter change or have I been given the wrong oil filters ?

Cheers,
Ray

According to "SUBARUFAST" programm CD from 01/07/2002 to 31/03/2003 the correct part number is 15208AA024 and from 01/04/2003 until today is 15208AA080.

Wow, thanks very much, excellent info !

Anyone have any info as to why they changed the oil filter / part# ? Where there problems with the first one ? Also, the new one looks smaller ? Surely bigger is better ?

Thanks again guys

It's the same part but they change only the code with newer models, this is what Subaru Service told me and they use both filters on WRX/STI02 and 03!

and now if a dealer orders stock from i.m they can only get the 080 filter which is now to be fitted to any car that used to have the 024 filter even the classic shape.

Yup,
apparently Subaru have changed their oil filters for a new black 'slim line' version, with "ENGINE" written on the base!!
Got told this when I went to get my oil filter the other week, and was warned so I didn't panic when I opened the box!!

Don't quite know the reason why, but days of the 'old' light blue filters seems numbered.......

Capacity is slightly reduced but the sealing mechanism is better, have had both on my '9 and there has been no noticeable difference in temperature or oil pressure. Still take 30 mins to fill it properly even so !!!

they have reduced the size of the filter to limit the "heating effect" the filter casing was getting off the exhaust, so now fit a smaller diameter filter to allow more air colig space [or so they say].
this filter was introduced on 03 Forester turbo's only, now has supersceded ALL subaru range fitments, so as all the suppliers run out of the old larger capacity ones, you will have no choice but to replaces with these diddy things.
