well, when i had mine done, they never should me the bill for parts or labour typical subaru if you ask me. then i had to put the transmission fluid in the gearbox meself after driving it for 40 miles not knowing anydifferent
so i don't really know how much it'll cost ya, but you could try a gearbox centre as it would be somewhere like that, that would do it and not the subaru guy's...i don't think anyway.

there is a nut at the end of the gear cluster next to one of the 5th gear rings, this nut is about 30mm size ish. just needs tightening. however, you have to remove the rear sections of the box to get to it. once tightened, tap the edge of the nut ring into the grooves on the shaft to prevent it coming undone again.
wont pop out of gear when its done.
remember to use new gaskets for the gearbox sections on reassembly.
cheers

I had this problem on my MY00.
There's a kit Subaru use to fix this that doesn't entail having the gearbox off. The kit doesn't replace the 5th gear synchro and costs about £250 to fit if I remember rightly.
I went to Osbournes in Colchester (sadly closed now..) with literally a few days left on the warrenty.
Their standpoint was that as it was a known fault, the warranty company won't cough up for it, but if the 5th gear synchro had been damaged - they would.
I ended up having a whole new synchro put on which, if I'd have paid for it, would have cost £500+
It's worth getting it sorted ASAP because the loose nut can eventually work itself completely loose and end up rattling around in your gearbox doing untold amounts of damage!
