Won`t be for a while yet but as my cars done nearly 75k and soon it`ll hopefully have over 280bhp i`m thinking a bit of re-build with better internals etc will be in order in the future (especially as i`m thinking of going the bigger turbo/fmic route aswell).
So, who goes where? and who trusts who? when it comes to getting the spanners out
Thank you please very muchos
P.s. am only after places in or around northern england, don`t wanna be going too far

You've opened a can of worms with this thread! I reckon you'll get a dozen people saying a dozen different tuners. Its not a case of who anyone else trusts but who would you trust to do it? I'll give you the first. Try Stuart at Townend Garage.

Roger Clark Motorsport have built a number of high power (400-500 bhp) 2.0 Impreza engines with a lot of mileage run on them to prove their reliability. Most of these cars are also used for trackday work.

yeah think you`re right there old boy, am thinking Townend myself due to their relative closeness and the fact if they can knock up a rally engine, they can knock up a road engine too.
Mark, did you get that e-mail i sent with splitter template on? thought it might be useful, or did you already have it? Its way of my league in terms of having the patience to be measuring everything and then trying to 'bend' it AND actually get it right at the same time!

No Idea... but i've made a mental note to check this thread when my tarty MY02 goes bang
Late night Scoobynet surfing seems to indicate that most people have their "favourite" tecks to Blueprint engines with no names mentioned....

I know an engine builder that builds silly cosworth engines, silly subaru engines and basically silly engines, can you wait one / two months to seperate silly engines from the kids? (he says probably being youngest)
Having said that what do you want to achieve with your build?
You supplying parts..
oh and if you want a 2.0, my mate is building a silly 2.0litre engine..
well over 500bhp iirc.. 'were' they a moderator??

David, don`t want to go mental.........yet, so was thinking of re-build with better internals (that would run forever at around 400bhp) but not top of the range internals coz i`ll only be wanting to spend 'a bit' instead of 'alot' if that makes sense. Maybe with 'only' 400bhp in mind i would only need a rebuild using standard UK turbo parts which would keep costs down, any thoughts?

if i was having a rebuild with just better rods and pistons etc i would go to scoobyclinic 01246 590807 or www.scoobymania.co.uk as they are both local to me.
but if i wanted to go mental with the rebuild, then odd kid is the daddy

If you stuck to 350 BHP approx I would suggest sticking with your standard engine, even at its present mileage, assuming it is running fine.
Suggest go for 20G, FMIC, induction/inlet pipe, headers, 3" exhaust, 550s, fuel pump/reg, water injection and try to get good power at sensible boost. Budget on changing the clutch and gearbox (STi 7 and Chalak/Lateral boxes seem to be going well) and see how the engine takes it would be my suggestion, or if you want a bit more consider block and heads from an STi 5/6 or even 7 if the right price. You could even consider just changing the pistons on your existing engine?
If you are committed to 400 + BHP then indeed change the engine, but the massive extra costs for another 50 BHP are of questionable value, plus engine swaps are rarely plain sailing and you can create problems as you solve others (just look at my projects thread )
Lots of options, lots of people are going different routes.

John, still ok for 25th July?
When the time comes would you say fmic is near enough essential or can i get away with a better top mount? am asking as a brand new STi8 intercooler with brackets is a little over £450 all in from my nearest subaru dealership and i`m assuming it won`t take much to get it to fit, they`re a fair bit bigger than the standard my99 uk intercooler

Abbey (and John Banks)
I'm following this thread hoping to pick up a few pointers as where to go next (mine is MY02 with a few *cough* mostly tarty *cough* mods)..no real warranty.
Looks like 350 BHP atainable with UK internals for Abbey's car with improved Cooling (FMIC), improved fuel going in (pumps and injectors), improved forced induction (turbo), improved flow out of the engine, fuelling Etc
I just wondered how much this applies to my own MY02 ??
Abbey... How many pound notes have you set aside for this as a rough guide

Mid-Life,
I have the same concerns (MY02 WRX) - I have so far gone for the APS 'CS' kit, which includes 3" exhaust (turbo back, with one 'sport' cat), CAI, dump valve, FMIC and Unichip piggy-back (not my first choice I admit, but the kit is designed around it)
along with some other sundries (I/C water spray, cast turbo discharge)
I have been having an email conversation with Mark Aigin at Lateral Performance, and also have received info from Safari in Aus about my 'project phase 2'. They are both recommending upgrading the con-rods, pistons, fuel injectors, fuel pump, FPR and then the turbo to increase power to my 'suggested' 350-375bhp. The choice of turbo is still open, it depends on my final requirements (responsiveness vs. absolute power) and a 'suggested' change of the engine management.
Now, I do have 'slightly' different conditions to the UK so the stress on the internals is a big issue here, as well as the ability to run max boost for probably longer periods than 'normal'
Apologies to Abby-lad for the temporary 'hi-jack'!

John, righto, fmic it is
Mark, git! lol I`m relying on knowledge gained from an advanced saloon car driving course i went on, so i`ll probably wreck it!
Neil, no worries
Midlife, i`ll tell you at the next meet

Midlife, and everyone else, there`s a possible group buy of gruppe headers in the offing in General section, price will be less than £400, which in my eyes is bl@@dy good value for the amount of torque increase on offer (20-30lb ft)

Looked at the group buy and the picture on the first page..very shiney metal
Please help me here .
I have to visualise things to help me along...I am a Tart remember Headers to me are the pipes that take the exhaust gasses away from the cylinder head towards the turbo.
If so I'm not sure what the stainless steel ones will do ??

I have a standard "example" EcuTek map for a Decat MY02...not sure if it could cope with yet another change...
I'll think about this one particularly as I guess (only a guess) the EcuTek map would start to run lean. Still waiting to see if the PSI 3 boys are going to get "knocklinking" on the SECS (mark II) before adding to the det possibilities
Faster..
It can't be LOUDER, I daren't run the engine near home for waking the neightbours

Mike, i`m led to believe you still keep the flat four sound with these headers as they are still unequal length
Midlife, if you`ve already had a tek2 won`t you have already paid your 'registration fee' for using Ecutek software? if so you would only have to pay someone like John Banks for his time to adjust your map instead of the full whack again wouldn`t you? worth looking into with John Banks i reckon

Just a quick observation....
Having a SECS acting as a knock indicator is somewhat useless. The "Knocking Signal" digital data channel from the ECU is sampled too slowly to get any meaningful data. The engine would have to be detting quite badly before you'de actually see anything flash up. If it's that bad then you'de have heard it and backed off anyway... well if you had any mechanical sympathy you would anyway.
The knock correction is a better indicator of how happy the engine is but without knowing the amount of possible correction at a certain RPM and load point, you'de never know how happy it was.
I still maintain that the ONLY proper way to detect knock is with det cans, no signal processor you buy at sensible cost is quite as good as a human brain. The next most sensible choice is a knock meter such as the KnockLink. Part of the reason for having it is to cater for the eventuality that there is knock and the ECU cannot "hear" it, in which case the SECS would not see it either, but a separate meter should.
With regard to engine builds, there are many options from cheap & chearful, to stratospheric budgets... just depends what you want to achieve and what you want to spend. Naturally, the more power and reliability you want, the more it will cost.
There are a few things afoot which could reshape the Subaru tuning landscape. I can't give out too much information, it's all a little hush-hush at the moment. The premise here is not to compromise the purpose of the vehicle... put simply, to increase power and torque at every single point of the rev range, without in any way compromising driveability (ie no more turbo lag, no peaky power band, no sudden rush of torque).
Cheers,
Pat.

Thanks for the reply re SECS...Completely agree but I hear (mumblings) that the next generation SECS will have an input from a Knocklink sensor displayed on the screen. Rather like the add-on for the Oil / Temp / Pressure sensors now available.... I look at Sat Nav Screens and wonder how easy it would be for the SECS guys to produce something similar with colour screen, multi-function dislay etc............SECS guys I am waiting
Abbey
Moving from an example map to a custom map essentially FOC is a difficult thing
I would guess from a "mappers" point of view ECuTek have spent a lot of development money on this and I guess they protect their "copyright" and investment...Quite rightly so.
I have no "right" to pitch up at John Bank's door and say I have paid for an EcuTek remap (original and the £100 addition for the de-cat re-map) and expect something for free.
Given John's well earned reputation I'd love to have a custom re-map (extra work over the holidays might make this a possibility) but would not expect this for a reduced price. A fair days work for a fair days pay.
Cheers
