To Ecutek or not
#1
My 1st post, so apologise if subject has been done to death.
I have a my01 wrx with TSL decat centre and group N back box, also itg forwhat its worth. Looking for more oooooomph, but concerned about mot difficulties with decat down pipe. If I go for Ecutek without further mods, what power gain is likely. If went for full decat 1st, what is likely power gain with Ecutek. What increase in noise likely with full decat (5 door with understanding kids, not sure about Mrs.) any advice appreciated.

Many thanks m8. Finding my way around. Looks as if Ecutek as stands will produce about 240/250bhp. Must be worth doing. Anyone have a recomendation as to where to go for remap?

Brandon,
I'm also in the same boat - MY01, TSL Centre and BB. With the same concerns as you.
My car was on the rollers at Nobles in Chesterfield last October and made 232BHP.
The point is ecutek is expensive for another 10BHP's....are you sure your figures are right ? - according to the dyno page the latest additions are last year - Ecutek for MY01 is relatively new.
This has been discussed in detail for the last couple of months or so and I understood the gains with ecutek were more significant than 240BHP or so
Cheers
Chris

With full decat they seem to be getting 270 + BHP at Power Engineering. Should be 250+ with the original downpipe on the same rollers, but rollers vary day to day, car to car, and in different parts of the country.

Im in the same boat. I know i need ECUTEK or LINK ECU (STi 5) but really dont know which route to take! I think ECUTEK but my car is really letting me down at the minute. Firstly the clutch lets me down and then my Leda springs snap to bits!! Then the Brakes!!!
I will be in touch soon though JB.

With just a backbox swap, 255-260bhp is possible, but this figure rises to 285bhp with a full system.
On the standard ecu, 260bhp can be achieved with just the full exhaust.

Brandon,
I visited Mr. Croney's establishment recently for an ECUTEK - I already had ScoobySport downpipe, ScoobySport centre and Prodrive box. To say the car is better is understating the fact. The ECU is still learning its new map (takes 50-200 miles) but the car has much more power, drives better off boost and is SSSSSOOOOO much smoother that the cost is justified - it feels like a new car.
ECUTEK has my vote.

Many thanks all for the pointers. It looks as if I shall have to start saving for the full decat and Ecutek. Worry about the Mot when the time comes. I don't suppose any one knows of any "obliging" Mot testers in the Notts/South Yorks area (off record)

Certainly worth it on the old shape cars too. It seems to have smoothed out the throttle response so that while there's less of a kick at 3k, the overall acceleration is more progressive; deceptively so, and pulls harder all the way through the rev range especially from 5k upwards, which was where I felt the old one was running out of puff.
I find that I can do everything I did before, but in a higher gear; when I'm feeling lazy; which is most of the time.

Do the up and down pipe to get the turbo in earlier.
Do the ecutek to get more boost (ie torque and power) and better drivability. If you're concerned about emissions, fit a sports cat. I have (APS sports cat exhaust, scoobysport up-pipe, Power Engineering ECUtek), and got 284bhp/272lbft. The torque comes it so much earlier and harder it hardly feels like the same engine.

Reading the original post about noise, the decat downpipe will add an audible whine whenever the turbo is spinning. If the existing exhaust is quite noisy, then I don't think you'll notice a great deal.
In my set up, it was the PE twin backbox that made it really loud.

Why are you worrying so much about the downpipe at MOT time? put a s/s d/pipe on and just swap the centre pipe over for the original at MOT time, it`ll pass and it`ll take half an hour to swap them over. Or do you not have the original cat`d centre pipe? i`d sell you one but i`d want STUPID money for it seeing as i was gonna swap the centre`s over for my MOT, will change my d/pipes instead if the price is right
