Just thought I would ask, so is Piston Slap detromental to the engine, Im talking a couple of slaps on start up in the morning??
Do I carry on regardless or do I worry and have them take the engine to bits ??
This is the first time I heard it and it was definately slap and not the usual Tappet sounds, Im dying to hear some other scoob engines on a cold start up to listen for differences, new cars and older ones.
Anyway, if anyone has any views on the above, much apreciated.

I too have slap, and my car is a UK MY98 Turbo of which I am the second owner. Does this mean that I should be able to get it fixed FOC instead of the 1.5K that I was quoted at my last service?

AFAIK, piston slap is a known manufacturing fault on the MY98 UK Impreza's and Subaru UK should fix it FOC. Since it's a well-known and admitted too manufacturing fault, warranty isn't an issue.

If you do a bit of searching on this board for 'piston slap' you'll find some more information.

Edited coz I can't speil

Subaru UK were doing some that were just beyond the warranty period, FOC, but I doubt they would do a 98. The car is now 5 years old.

£1500 seems a bit steep, we do this job for £705 incl vat on a UK and it takes just over a day.

I asked my local dealer about this and they said they would put in a good will jesture claim but dont reckon they'll get anywhere as its like 5 years old

But if you get anywhere please let me know as I'd like to get mine sorted too FOC.

Cheers

I discovered this first time around, and was the one that posted my results.

They will fix it as its a known manufacturers fault, and warranties do not come into it.

I believe i got the ball rolling on this last year.

Dig your heels in, so long as you have a good service record it will be repaired
