problem with dawes device ? Help !
#1
Hi
I have fitted Dawes device today to MY96 turbo. I have an AFR an Boost gauge which have been working on car fine for over 6 weeks. After putting Dawes device on I am getting like a strangled effect on car, lots of air trying to be sucked in but car shudders and basicly bogs down. I have slowly (painfully) tweaked with device one twist at a time one way then the other and still its the same. All cables are untwisted and the 2 pipes - one from wastegate is sealed with screw and pipe clip - same for the second part of pipe which did join onto pipe coming from nipple of turbo. So I am fully perplexed ! I have full decat system and blitz induction kit which have all been on car for over 3 months and working fine.
Any one got any ideas (apart from take the damn thing off !)
After intially installing device I let engine idle and warm then went for a normal drive noting my boost was just a bit under normal. Stopped engine, turned device 1 turn pulled away .. wahey !! 2nd gear what a difference !, then when going into 3rd it did the bogged down trick on me and I haven't be able to rectify it since. I have cleaned hole with pin - just incase - and spring and bearing are still inside device.
So ??????????????????????????????? anybody
Please help if you can.
Cheers

when is it cutting back?
Mine went well to 1.05 bar then lost power.
It turned out to be the fuel cut out. I fitted a Dawes fuel cut out raiser & after a bit of tweaking it was fine. I now run 1.3 bar with no problems ..... except for the clutch I just trashed.

It bogs down at around 0.5 bar in 1st and 2nd gear.
Just had a thought, MY96 was a late 96 model (November)is there any chance that it might have the same set-up as the MY97 models ?? - would that mean I need estra piping or involve the solenoids ?

The wastegate will limit boost to ~0.5bar unless you bleed pressure from its control signal line... it sounds like there is no bleed occuring. Maybe the unit is installed incorrectly.

thanks Moray, I have since uninstalled dawes, dump valve (subaru mechanic I spoke to thought that might have been the case ?? - but it wasn't)and blitz induction kit but I am still getting the problem, spoke to a friend of mine and we came to the conclusion that it might be a wastegate problem as the car gets to 0.5 bar then sounds as though it is dumping all the air ! Do you have any solutions ?
Cheers for all your help

If you have uninstalled the dawes, then I can't see it as a wastegate problem. More like a boost solenoid problem as the system is not bleeding anything away to raise the boost. Or there could be a problem with the car hence a "limp home" mode ?!?!

Thanks H
Is the Boost solenoid the golden/brassy colour one on the drivers wing ?
How easy are they to replace ? could I fit it myself to see if that solves the problem ?
