SURGING MY99
#1
It dosent always do it, just when it is cold .
I think that the clutch judder is just a common
fault with the scoobys . I have just started a new job in my home town so maybe if i was to take it out on a long run to kick **** out of it, it might clear it up. If it dont tuff.

I also fitted a s/s downpipe, it sounds like the exhaust has blown. I have a new turbo to downpipe gasket to go on hopfully this will cure the noise that makes my car sound like a V W bettle on steroids will let you know what the outcome is.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem.
my99 turbo seems to be surging when cold nothing to extreme just slight . It happens when you just ease it through the gears just on boost and no more. The car hass been fitted with a twin piston dump valve and a full magnex pleae help lads TA BRY

I have this Exact same problem, its only when cold and its when you are driving at a steady pace... as you say around 2500 - 2800 revs. It goes after a few mins when the engine is warmed.
I did have an Air Flow thing (very technical I know!) changed under warrenty a while back which seemed to cure it but its back now a few months on (also no warrenty left!)
Do you find it doesnt always do this? I also get judder on the clutch very occasinally only when cold.

Surging is common on MY99/00's due to the ECU programme, it has an emissions thing in there so it runs a little off until its warmed up or something like that, its common anyway so dont worry too much about it and let your car warm up first (ie keep it under 2.5k for the first few miles till the oil gets warmed up) and you shouldnt have any problems with it

On a similar note to the problems with cold MY99/00 cars, I have a MY99 and have just had the DP replaced with a SS. When its cold, it sounds and feels as though its misfiring. Once the cars warmed up its fine.
Is this normal or something wrong?

Matt,
EcuTek doesn't cure the hesitation problem. Something they are so far unable to do, its the subaru map and IIRC they haven't touched the bit that causes this......
Not sure but think some have reported it is better with the TEK but still present.....
Cheers
Neil.

Can you describe surging? or check out my post - just wondering if it's the same thing but different descriptions?
As I would describe my problem as surging as well - ie: power - then dip in power - power surge - then dip again - all at low speeds where you would not expect turbo to kick in?

Black Cat...
I recon thats the same problem i mentioned above which got sorted under warranty, car was fine when rolling ie above second.. but sometimes it was a BIG power loss, like youd go to pull out on a roundabout..and.. Nothing! then suddently it would kick back in. Take it the dealer and they should sort it, it was some sort of air flow sensor thing on mine, took minutes to fix.

FAO Leon.
What you describe ie Big power loss on roundabouts, then suddenly power surge was the exact same thing I experienced in an MY99.
Same problem between the 2500 and 3000 rpm range ie intermittent hesitantcy which seemed like a misfire, which even began to happen when the engine was warm, which total began to pi$$ me off!
Had an AFM replaced under warranty few months ago which I thought was the problem, but dealer reckoned there would be a fault code showing if that had been the problem with the hesitancy.
Dealer replaced all the leads earlier this week and the problem seems to have gone away for now.
Cheers

The sudden Losses of power seem to be ok now, it hasnt happened for ages.. However sometimes when I floor it, in say second its as if the turbo isnt even comming on, if you keep your foot down the turbo comes on about 5.5K or let off and back on again and it kicks in.. wierd.

dunno if this is same - when cold you go to pull away and it's as though it's stalled then all of a sudden it comes back to life with a pop only when and cold and only rarely kinda scary don't like pops in the morning
