Default Crunch into 4th at high RPM

Morning All

hope we're keeping well!

I brought my second Impreza two weeks ago

2004 Sti Type UK

the clutch was replaced with an exedy - previous owner doesn’t know which one!

have the invoice for labour and the gearbox oil was also changed at the same time this work was done last October. Is there anything I could go back to them on?

having looked under the car there was some oil at the bottom of the sump couldn’t see a leak - could have just been over filled at the time!

The gear changes aren’t butter smooth but this could be cheap gear oil. The problem is in 4th really.

at high rpm downshifting from 5th or 6th down to 4th crunches. Shifting from 5th or 6th into 3rd then into 4th is fine.

what could the problems be? I have synchros as one. Cheap gear oil as another.

Could any bushes or gaskets on the gear stick be shot?

cant think of anything else also to note in first unless a perfect set of I have a slight judder but this could be the characteristics of the exedy clutch

new clutch has done around 2500 miles and the car has 100k.

many thanks in advance guys!

Default .

My 6 speed started crunching going from 4th to 5th at high rpm around 8 years ago. I thought i would try an oil change before i went to the expense of a box rebuild. I initially changed to a silcolene oil which made it 10 x worse, after abit of googling it looked like castrol syntrax worked well with worn syncros, changed the box oil to that and it worked great for about 5 years untill the crunch came back, probally a combonation of more wear on the syncros and oil degrading. 2 years ago i changed oil again to redline shock proof light weight and the crunch as gone away again. I know my syncros are past their best and i am going to need a box rebuild at some point and i may be causing more problems by not doing it sooner rather than later but different oil has worked for the last 8 years. The 6 speed boxes are very fussy on oil, its a relatively cheap option to try for a temp fix around £70 for the oil and an hours labour if you cant do it yourself.

I had the same problem on my STi,some times I had crunch on 4th and 6th at high rpms and quick shifting but when I changed to castrol universal semi synthetic 6 months ago it never missed a bit,no crunches anymore.I knew that in the box was a fully synthetic oil and after a bit of searching I found that the 6 speed synchros are happier with semi synthetic.

That's just masking the problem.
the root cause of the crunch is worn synchro, up to you on what you want to do to fix it.

You have numerous options.....

Thwaites, scoobyclinic or AS performance would be the best places to get it rebuilt. Unfortunately non of them are close to you
