The knocking noise could be anything from diff, suspension, wheel bearing, warn anti roll bar bushes to exhaust mounts. The whistling sound could be a dodgy dump valve not shutting when under boost normally upto about 4000rpm the 1997/98 were prone to this.

Well, its been found. The cause that is.

I used the well tried an tested method of putting two todlers in the boot and getting them to bounce while I lay underneath. Never fails to amuse the kids!.

Anyway its either one of the rear Koni coilovers or a bush that needs replacing.

Thanks again to all those people who offerred advice.

Hol

Oh, and Trout, I used cross the Test everyday form Hants when I worked in Salisbury.

Just bought my STi4R and took it on holiday for a 400miles or so.

The more I drove the car, the more pronouced a noise seemed to be coming from the OSR of the car. Usually at low speed, it sounds like a cross between a knock and someone blowing over the neck of a milk bottle. Very Bizarre.

when I get underneath the car, I cannot find anything to rattle but there is evidence of oil on the side of the diff casing. Its not dripping on the floor and the car has been serviced reguarily, but im going to top it up today anyway. Which oil do you ise in the type R rear diff?s. Theyre LSD arent they?

The only other non standard part of the car is the kony coil over kit that was recently reconditioned. Could this just be noise from them?

It was more of a hum than a whistle.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me or possibly a diff bearing if it's been low on oil? You say OSR, does the noise go away on right hand bends and get worse on left handers? That would be a sign of a failed wheel bearing.

Good luck, hope it's not too expensive!

I had a few prob's with noise in my type R...
the dealer changed the diff oil and all noises dissapeared.
This could be a place to start as its a cheap fix....and if not the problem, then at least you have fresh oil...

I thought about changing the oil and bought some fully synthtic 75/90 diff oil. Is this the right oil?

Trouble was I couldnt get the plug off!.

Ho hum.

The noise seems to be at very low revs, and not 3-4000 when I would expect to hear a dodgy dump valve.
