Is Dawes the device I need?
#1
Hi,
I think I've lost the thrill of speed from my MY99 and it feels bog slow. I have a Forge VTA dump valve, SS Back box and an ITG panel filter.
Sounds like a Dawes Device is the therapy I need. I need so objective info on this, like
- Whats the BHP gain?
- Whats the Torque gain?
- How do these gains vary with differing boost?
- Anything else...
Oh, is it 100% necessary I have a boost gauge to operate the device safely? Any horror stories? Anyone run the device without a boost gauge?

I ran the dawes without boost gauge on my MY02...I set it low to ensure no replacement engine required only to find when I did fit a gauge it was running at a slightly lower boost than standard - when I fitted the dawes, I removed the original pipe with internal restrictor which gives the car more boost.
Best you get a gauge, then fit the dawes for best results. It also helps since you can set the dawes just a fraction lower than the fuel cut defender...It took me a few attempts to get it right though...just under 16.5 psi for MY02.

please waffle on John I've started to think of what to get next
I've got a Dawes and I dont see how you can set it up without a Boost gauge but horses for corses... I also fitted the AFR (but no knock link).. Mine (MY96) always runs rich @ 1bar which is as high as I can go without hitting the fuel cut (does everyone else run super rich @1bar?) and I dont want to get beyond that.
I have also decat my downpipe + SS BB but retained my Center cat (and it still passes MOT emissions ). I also run a Blitz air filter but I wouldn't recomend that for new age engines as I've read the MAF tends to let go pretty fast
The dawes was truely awesome and transformed my car 2nd and 3rd gears @ WOT still put a massive grin on my face. The dawes makes your car boost much faster (due to little or no wastegate creap). As for actual power gains.. never dyno'd it but look @ the dyno pages to see
[edited to add Dawes gains]

scroll down too "5th June 2002 - Dawes" I've got a load of links about it (mostly to pages here)

I had a Dawes fitted and used a boost gauge and computer to monitor fuel/air and max boost whilst installing only. We had to adjust it to 16.5 to leave it safely below fuel cut.
No problems so far and the car is much better with it on. I do not have a boost gauge fitted now.
