SO now i'm running recovery software to reclaim the files ...
why? bease the recovery utils wiped the hard drive lol
Its only 3 months of Photo's, so not too bad

I've got a 2 bay qnap at home, a couple of 4 bay units and a 12 bay unit at work. First one to drop a disk was the newest (12 bay). It ran a full disk scan and rebuilt the array without a problem. The others have been faultless. Using them as NAS and also connecting Windows/VMware to them over iSCSI.

That's the risk of not backing up, or not running some RAID-like device.
I'm building a NAS but with two HDD's. One to backup to daily.
I read somewhere that HDD's fail at about a 1% rate.

If the drives were mirrored, why didn't you just replace the failed drive and let it rebuild the mirror?
Synology devices are superb - but if you're having trouble, get in touch with their support.

Originally i had 2x samsung spinpoint drives, drive one failed..... 3 months into setting up the NAS..
Reading reports, it reccomemnded using different drives to reduce the chance of both drives failing within a very short space of time... (sound idea really)
I replaced it with a WD red NAS drive ......
3 months later drive one fails again..... and this time its the WD!!!
If the drive has crashed, you cant just rebuild it, you have to run an extended smart test and contact Synology.....
reading reports regarding similar issues in the web, it said to use HDD management and reinstall the volume....
So into tools and highlight reinstall volume.....
and i get the message this will delete all data on the volume...
2x drives mirrored.... format one volume and mirror the other....
erm no its delete data on both bloody drives...
i seem to recall it did this before...
btw its an old unit so only runs disk manager 3.xx
just run an overnight restore, but its not finding much, (luckily i have a 3rd backup)
may be time for a more updated modern unit

Not sure about your unit as you sound like you are having a nightmare. I know on my 2 bay and 4 bay units I can just pull a drive and the NAS keeps going. Yes it beeps a lot and complains but the data is there.
You should have been able to copy off your data after your drive failed by just removing it. If that is not the case I would be straight onto Synology as it sounds like things are not working correctly.
Also, you may want to confirm that your drive really is dead by putting it in a computer. Maybe you NAS drive is at fault and cannot accurately read/write to your HDD for that bay.

My First WD Green 2TB drive failed in my Synology DS110J last years after only being in the NAS for over 9 months. Now running a 4TB Hitachi drive for coming up to a year now. Fingers crossed no failure.
The sinology I have is only a single bay drive, but have now learnt to tether some USB 2.5" drives of it and have the thing back everything up every night. Only use mine for Streaming Films and TV around the house using Media players like the Patriot, WD TV Live and the AC Ryan. ANd also using another 3.5" USB drive and some backup soft war eto back up any documents and photos of the PCs.
