Default Creating a back up.

My laptop is beginning to run slower and slower and one day I know it will die.
I want to create a backup on an external hard drive of all photo's, music and other files -cv's debt tracker sheets etc.

Do I just connect the external drive and drag over what I want or do I do create back up - but then does this take all the information so the pictures / music are useable on another machine?

I want to transfer the files to the external then wipe the laptop and start again.

You could do a lot worse than use microsoft synctoys to select the folders you wish to back up. It copies the files rather than create one large archive so folders are all easily retrievable.

There are loads of options depends how IT literate you are and to a certain extent, it depends on what you are backing up - static data, or folders where files are regularly added, deleted or changed.

Have a look also at deltacopy and cwRsync.

Do take regular backups of your data even when your laptop is in good health.

Here's another option for you.
Have a look at iDrive - secure online backup
